In 1944, as the Allies were advancing towards the Low Countries following the Normandy landings, a Limited Edition of Steinbeck's The Moon Is Downwas translated and clandestinely published in Holland. There were several illustrations included, specifically for this edition. Since Steinbeck's book was intended to promote resistance to the German occupying forces, it was published with pseudonyms for both the translator and illustrator. The book was not published again until the war's end, and then only in a regular trade edition. This highly desirable, scarce copy is Number 703 of only 1025 copies. .
