This copy INSCRIBED BY HOLLING on the half title in the year of publication. A former owner has written his name in ink on the half title, and someone has written the date, 1948, in ink at the bottom of the title page. The book is otherwise fine and clean in a near fine dust jacket which has only light fraying at the spine tips. A 1949 Newbery Honor Book.

A very good, clean copy in a very good DUST JACKET which has chipping at the spine tips, joints and corners.

Illustrated with full-page duotone plates on each recto with text in a border with a small device on each verso This copy INSCRIBED BY TUDOR TO HER NIECE along with a small drawing. A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket which has a small blemish at the spine from an old repair. Familial inscriptions from Tudor are scarce.
(1871). First illustrated edition. 12mo orange pictorial card, stringbound. Two pages of publisher's ads as well as ads on the inside front and rear wrappers and outside rear wrapper. A woodcut frontispiece and seven additional full-page woodcuts by S. Eytinge, Jr. A new, illustrated publication of Harte's poem, Plain Language from Truthful James. This was intended as a light portrayal of life in the California mining camps, but was later picked up by Easterners as a basis for hatred of Chinese immigrants. One small spot on the front cover, else a fine copy.
