The History of the Conquest of Mexico. 3 vols 1844 first Paris, Galignani edition.

First Paris, Galignani edition in English, 3 vols, 8vo, pp. xxiv, (1-3), 4-308; xiv, (1-3), 4-305, (1); xiv (1-3), 4-341, (1), 2 folding maps. Whether the Paris Galignani edition or the Paris Baudry edition is the first Continental edition is unclear. Sabin 65263 says the Baudry edition is the first Continental edition (with no mention of the Gagliani edition). BAL 16339 cites a December 12, 1843 letter from Robert Walsh to William Prescott noting that the Galignani edition was published even before volumes 2 and 3 of the first American edition, New York 1843 (no mention of the Baudry edition). Original half black morocco and marbled boards, backs in six compartments, gilt lettered in the second and fourth, five raised bands between blind fillets, gilt date at foot, marbled edges and endpapers. Attractive set in near fine condition but for a quality partial repair to the upper joint of volume 3. Sheets in unusually clean fresh condition, unmarked, complete; maps clean fine condition.
