(A total of 48 engravings of 51 in the Lists of Plates). Period half burgundy sheep and marbled boards, backs in six compartments gilt lettered in the second and fourth, five raised bands. Very good+ set with minor rubbing and faded backs but joints strong and no chips to the sheepskin back strips. Some scuffs and rubbing to corners, edges and extremities and minor chips to the marbled paper. Sheets and plates with some spots and smudges, but without foxing and plates mostly quite sharp. The engraved title of vol 3 with shallow upper marginal tear with 1/8 to 5/16 x 4.24 inches loss of little matter. Lacks 3 plates of volume 3 as listed above--no offset to opposite pages suggests they were not bound in. The set had been selling since 1859; it's likely they ran short of some plates. Neat old gift inscription on front paste down endpapers. H10766
