Samuel Vince (1749 1821) was an English clergyman, mathematician and astronomer at the University of Cambridge. First published in 1781, this work was intended to be preparatory to the reading of Sir Isaac Newton's i Principiai0 . "By this proposition," the essay concludes, "the orbit of a planet may be found, having given three distances from the sun, and the angles between them." On the first blank of each volume is the ownership inscription, dated Hong Kong March 19, 1900, of Walter J. Southam who from 1901 was the General Secretary of the Hong Kong YMCA. Loosely inserted is a slip of paper with an Autograph Note: "Tim & Mimi - V. many thanks for the splendid party & the v. kind later hospitality - Love David W - I'll be in the Hope tonight -". To describe this as a bound copy when the only thing holding the sheets together (inadequately) is three staples is to push at the very boundaries of bibliographical tolerance.
