One volume with many pages partially removed and a later leaf loosely inserted. A series of adjunct orderly books from the Napoleonic Wars, recording general orders, regimental orders, courts martial, daily passwords, copies of letters, and other official documents. The regiment that became the 15th Light Dragoons was raised in 1759 by George Augustus Elliot, Lord Heathfield, who was also their first Colonel. They served with distinction in the army of Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick against the French (who had occupied Hanover earlier in the war), Austrians, and their allies. The regiment’s first major action was at the Battle of Emsdorf, 16 July 1760, where their rapid advance secured the victory and bought them high commendation from their commander. During the period covered here Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, served as Colonel. In 1803-4 the regiment was on the Kentish coast (Walmer, Ramsgate) in preparation for French invasion. In 1805 it was stationed at Radipole barracks, Dorset, then moving to Woodbridge, Suffolk, in 1806. In 1810 they were stationed outside London and these orders record that they patrolled the streets of the capital at the time of the riots that accompanied the arrest of the radical MP Sir Francis Burdett that April. The volume for 1813 records active service in Portugal and Spain, including a reference to "the perfect satisfaction expressed" by Wellington when reviewing the regiment, and the Battles of Esla, Morales, and Vittoria (with orders given before the battle for the Hussar’s movements). The regiment was present at Waterloo, an event recorded in a somewhat laconic manner, and during the period covered by the final volumes were stationed in France. From the library of the Electors and Kings of Hanover, Marienberg Castle.
