Ushant
AIKEN, Conrad An "autobiographical narrative" in experimental prose, defying the conventions of standard autobiography or memoir; the essay is narrated by a character named "D.," who was the main character, Demarest, of Aiken's first novel, Blue Voyage, in 1927. Binder's glue shadows at the joints; a near fine copy in a very good dust jacket with a crease to the rear panel and an open tear at the top edge there.- $45

From Right to Left
FIELD, Frederick Vanderbilt An autobiography of a Vanderbilt heir who became a member of the Communist Party. Apparently inscribed by the author: "For Kathleen - with good memories of those days - Fred." (We cannot authenticate the "Fred" in question, but context strongly suggests the inscription is authorial.) Very good in a very good dust jacket.- $75

Meditations in Green
WRIGHT, Stephen The uncorrected proof copy of his first book, a highly praised novel -- "the chronicle of the corruption and decay of Spec 4 James Griffin under the pressures of an unreal war." Winner of the Maxwell Perkins Award. The publication date has been amended by hand on the rear cover. Nick to spine crown; still near fine in wrappers.- $25

The Ugly American
LEDERER, William J. and BURDICK, Eugene One of the early books on Americans in Vietnam, covering the same people and events as Graham Greene's The Quiet American, but from a different viewpoint. The book was a huge bestseller, reprinted numerous times and distributed through BOMC; it became so much a part of the culture that its title became a buzzword for a certain kind of American approach in the Third World -- albeit one which was used in a manner somewhat different from the authors' intentions. An extremely common book, but quite scarce in the first printing. Very good in a very good, first issue dust jacket (blurb by "John T.[sic] Marquand").- $50
