The History of England from the Accession of James the Second (4 Volumes)

MACAULAY, Thomas Babington Volumes I and II 6th Edition, Volumes III and IV, No Edition Stated (NB. Volume V was published posthumously in 1861) 8vo. hardbacks bound in full tan calf with raised bands, tan and green title labels, ornate gilt decoration to spines (slightly differing between Vols. I and II and Vols. III and IV). All edges and endpapers marbled. Armorial bookplate of Aubrey G. Jamaica (Aubrey George Spencer, second bishop of Jamaica, 1843–1872) to front pastedown of each volume and handwritten ink presentation inscription to The Lord Bishop of Jamaica, dated 1858, with illegible signature to early blank of Volume I. Occasional pencil underlinings in text of Volume I. Some foxing to prelims and bookplates. Very slight rubbing to spines, and a few light scuffs to boards. Overall a VERY GOOD, HANDSOME SET. The Third Edition. Large 8vo., (approx. 26cm x 20.5cm) modern rebinding (in 18th century style) of quarter calf, with raised bands and red title label, gilt, to spine, over brown buckram boards, with new endpapers. Vol I: [xvi] + 476pp; Vol II: 338pp + Index. Illustrated with 34 of 38 Copper Plate Engravings, many folding. (Lacking Plates 33, 36, 37, and 38 which do not appear to have been bound-in). Previous owner's modern bookplate to front pastedown, old ink inscriptions (one dated 1751) to title page and first page of the Preface which have some damage and areas of loss (please see photos). Occasional light foxing and handling marks. Plate numbers 2, 3 and 9 have small areas of engraving cut out and Plate 6 has a large closed tear. Some of the earlier Plates have been mis-bound and some have light edgewear and small closed tears. Light soiling to lower board, else a Good+ Copy. Decorative chapter heads and tailsand initial caps. Small page numbers to first and last sections hand-written in margins. Small signature to top of first page and large calligraphic rendering of Seneca's name to blank facing p.143. A few pages at front and rear have had edges professionally reinforced. Occasional light foxing, handling marks and small ink splashes. Slight rubbing to spine and corner edges. A GOOD+ COPY.
