Beebe, William the first of many printings - 239 pages, indexed, appendix, 77 illustrations from coloured plates, photographs and maps, the plates each with a tissue protector which contains a printed explanation . The book is Beebe's account of his expedition aboard the steam vessel Arcturus on the first oceanographic expedition of the New York Zoological society in an attempt to investigate the Sargasso Sea and the Humboldt Current & the Cocos. He also explores and gives his account of a visit to the Galapagos Islands. This copy bears the ownership signature of { Colonel } Louis L Babcock dated June 18, 1926. Babcock wrote the first scientific study of the Tarpon and Tarpon fishing. Laid in are 2 Beebe autograph letters on his stationary, imprinted with " Haitian Expedition " - 10th Expedition of the Department of Tropical Research, NY Zoological Society. One letter is a thank you for Babcock's Tarpon book, the other a report on his own Tarpon research and promises of his updates on the subject. The book is also signed by Beebe and one of his Reasearch associates from the expedition. A vg tight copy, the title gilt oxidized as usual, else a lovely association copy between two adventurous scientific writers with contemporary documents. Beebe is considered an early and enthusiastic conservationist & ecologist. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
