HOFFMAN, Heinrich 1st UK and English Language Edition 19.5 x 25.2 cm red cloth backed pictorial paper covered boards with title to the front. Pale grey endpapers 28 leaves printed on one side only with verse accompanied by 28 hand coloured illustrations including the decorative title page. The boards are very good considering the book's age with uniform toning and occasional marking commensurate with age. There is a little rubbing to the spine tips with minor loss and also to the corners, which are a touch rounded and edges with minor loss. with. Internally there is a German tax stamp on the title page and occasional spotting throughout, more so over the first and last few pages. There are a couple of tape repairs to the book on the front endpapers and also on the final page, which also has a section of paper reinforcement. Page 17 has loss measuring 4 x 2 cm at its greatest extent on the bottom margin and there are also a couple of short 1-2cm closed tears affecting the margins but none of these affect either the text or the illustration. There are light handling marks and spotting to most text pages but the illustrations are bright and clean. All in all an excellent complete copy in its original binding. Paraprosodies – 7 Dialogues
COCTEAU, Jean 11.2 x 22 cm grey paper wraps with red decoration and black titles to the front 37 [1]pp with erratum tipped in. The half title contains a red and blue profile portrait drawn by the artist with a personal inscription reading. ' à George/ Wright Hall /cet essai de solitude et de/ porter le poise à la/ hauteur d'une sucrie exacte./ avec l'amitie/ de Jean Cocteau'. The pamphlet also comes with its original mailing envelope written by Cocteau with his return address in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, France. There is a light horizontal mark just up from the end of the "S" of "DIALOGUES" and across onto the spine and a round mark immediately below the bottom triangle (slightly right of centre) on the front cover. Otherwise it is in at least near fine condition. The envelope is addressed by Cocteau to his friend George Wright Hall (1895-1974), who had studied in Edinburgh in the early 1920s and was a member of the 1922 Group. It bears its original stamps and Cocteau's return address. The envelope has been opened along the top and both side are now open too. The two sides of it remain partially joined along the bottom edge but this has been conserved by the application of Japanese paper. In all a lovely inscribed item complete with the envelope Cocteau used to send it and which has helped to keep the book so well preserved. MILNE, A. A. 1st Edition. 12.5 x 19.3 cm dark red cloth with gilt stamped vignette and border to the front, vignette to the rear and titles to the spine. Top edge gilt, pink pictorial endpapers, x,103[1]pp, with black and white illustrations by Ernest Shepard throughout. Clean, bright, unfaded boards with a touch of rubbing to the spine tips and corners, a little fading at the spine tips and pushing to the corners. At the top of the back board there are slight unobtrusive marks where a few drips have been brushed off, but can only really be seen at a certain angle in the light. Internally clean, without name, inscription or bookplate and just a hint of toning/acid migration to the free endpapers where the jacket flaps don'treach. The dust jacket which is now protected in a removable, clear cover (not shown) is lightly dust marked with toning to the spine which extends to a lesser extent for about 2 cm onto the front panel - it looks much worse in our images than in reality. There is rubbing to the spine tips and corners with minimal loss to the corners and loss to the head of the spine to a maximum of 0.8 cm and affecting the word "Now" in the title. This loss extends round onto the front and rear panels for 1cm. There are three small chips at the foot of the spine, two are minute and the other is a chip of 0.8 x 0.3 cm. There is a little creasing to the top edge of the rear panel and a couple of tiny nicks on the top and bottom edges. MILNE, A. A. 1st Edition, 12.5 x 19.5 cm green cloth with gilt stamped vignette of Pooh and Christopher Robin to the front within a single lined border and titles to the spine. Top edge gilt, Hundred Acre Wood map endpapers, [xiv] 58(2)pp with black and white illustrations by E H Shepard throughout. In original first state dust jacket priced at 7/6 and with the advert for the 117th Thousand of When We Were Very Young on the rear flap. The boards are clean and bright with just a touch of pushing to three of the four corners and to the spine tips. There is a tiny proud dot two thirds of the way down on the left of the front board (1.5cms in from the gilt rule) and a small ding at the bottom edge of the rear board Internally very clean, without name, inscription or bookplate and just a strip of toning/acid migration to the free endpapers where the dust jacket does not reach, noting a single 2mm spot at the bottom of the recto of the illustration preceding chapter 1. There are a few light spots along the fore edge of the text block. The binding is very firm and square with no cracks. The dust jacket which is now protected in a removable, clear cover (not shown) is much cleaner than is usually found with uniform toning that is more evident to the spine. There is a little rubbing to the corners and spine tips with minor loss to the corners on the front panel and of up to 3mm on the head of the spine which does not affect the titles. The foot of the spine has a very small triangular chip measuring 5 x 3mm. All in all a lovely looking clean 1st Edition copy in an excellent original, unrestored dust jacket. The Tailor of Gloucester
POTTER, Beatrix Deluxe edition. 11 x 14 cm blue cloth with ornate gilt stamped decoration and small spade shaped pictorial onlay to font board. All edges gilt, pictorial endpapers (double page endpapers repeated twice, as called for for this edition), 85[1]pp printed on one side only. A very good copy with a little light rubbing to the corners and spine. Name in pencil to the half title page and very light finger marks to p.52 and p.62/63, otherwise it appears beautifully clean and fresh inside. This deluxe edition replaced the floral fabric deluxe edition. The title page is dated 1903 and Linder (p.423) notes: ' [the floral fabric pattern] edition was replaced in October 1904 by one having a gilt decorated cloth cover with gold lettering. Copies having the year 1903 on the front of the title page would have been bound from the first edition sheets.' We can find only one copy at the time of listing, with the 1903 dated title page, and in this binding to have appeared at auction in the last 30 years and another forming part of the Leslie Linder bequest to the Victoria & Albert museum (LB 1579). E V B (BOYLE, Eleanor Vere) 1st Deluxe Edition. 20.5 x 27 cm brown bevelled buckram with gilt stamped titles on orange and cream cartouche and four gilt and white roses in each of the four corners. All edges gilt [iv]57[3]pp with 10 full page chromolithographic illustrations each with a captioned paper guards. There is a some rubbing to the spine tips and corners and edges with minor loss of cloth on the corners and 0.5 cm loss at the head of the spine. There are small cracks on the edges of the spine with minor loss but the notoriously delicate spine is intact and the binding remains firm. Internally clean, without name, inscription or bookplate. There is toning/spotting to the verso of the front free endpaper and facing recto of the frontispiece although the image is not affected and the usual ghosting from the images on the facing captioned guards. However the book is generally very clean with just the occasional light mark and a couple of small areas of spotting. All in all this is an excellent 1st Edition example of this beautifully illustrated 19th Century version of Beauty and the Beast in lovely condition.
