Paris, 20 February 1809. Louis-Mathieu Langlès (1763 1824), French philologist, linguist, translator, author, librarian and orientalist. He was the conservator of the oriental manuscripts at the Bibliothèque Impériale. Langlès corresponded with William Jones in Calcutta; and he was responsible for including the history and bibliography of the early publications of the Asiatic Society of Bengal in the third volume of the Magasin Encyclopédique. The 1811 edition of Jean Chardin's Voyages de monsieur le chevalier Chardin en Perse et autres lieux de l'Orient (The Travels of Sir John Chardin in Persia and the Orient), was edited by Langlès. His published works included Monuments anciens et modernes de lHindoustan; Alphabet Mantchou; and Instituts Politiques et Militaires de Tamerlan.

Autograph Letter Signed John Percy, to E.W.Cooke R.A., responding to an invitation, explaining “I have a volume on hand which I must get published as soon as possible”
PERCY, John. House of Commons, 20 October 1873. "I have brought for you a waterproof cloak which you left. I hoped to have brought also a specimen of Asperium Septentrionale." John Percy (18171889), metallurgist. In 1848 he contributed a paper to the Chemist on a mode of extracting silver from its ores (depending on the solubility of the chloride in sodium thiosulphate), which led to the Von Patera process, used at Joachimsthal, and the Russell process, employed in the western states of America. Percy made the first serious attempt at a survey of iron ore deposits in Britain. They were included in the volume Iron and Steel (1864), part of his great Treatise on Metallurgy, of which the first volume was published in 1861.- $58

Shepperson was not only a painter, a book and magazine illustrator, a cartoonist for Punch, but also a commercial artist, producing images for advertisements.- $58

PULTENEY, Sir William. Bath House [Piccadilly], 10 September 1782. Sir William Pulteney [formerly Johnstone], fifth baronet (17291805), politician and property developer (Great Pulteney Street). Pulteney's American interests appear to have stemmed from the appointment of his brother George Johnstone as governor of West Florida in 1763 and existing Johnstone family interests in the West Indies. On the outbreak of the American War of Independence in 1776 he and his brother George, by then also an MP, became involved in attempts at reconciliation.- $58

A series of four Autograph Letters Signed by Robinson, to Geo: Harris at Rugby School, acknowledging Drafts of Twenty Pounds, being payments for his Exhibition to Trinity College Cambridge. Together with two certificates of residence at Trinity, also sent as letters, each signed by William Lort Mansel, Bishop of Bristol and Master of Trinity.
CAMBRIDGE. Thomas Robinson, Trinity College. Trinity College Cambridge, 1811-1815. Thomas Robinson (1790-1873), Master of the Temple, and Arabic scholar, was educated at Rugby and at Trinity, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1813 as thirteenth wrangler and second classical medallist. He went out to India as a missionary priest, and there he began the translation of the Old Testament into Persian. He was chaplain to Reginald Heber, and was present at Trichinopoly on 2 April 1826 when Heber was drowned. In 1837 Robinson was appointed lord almoners professor of Arabic in the University of Cambridge.- $129

Manuscript Warrant, signed by five members of the Committee of Lords and Commons for the Admiralty and Cinque Ports, addressed to the Commissioners of His Majestys Navy, appointing “the Royalist frigatt (late under Command of Captaine Coxe) to be employed as a Pacquett boat” between Liverpool and Carrickfergus, “or such other place, in Ireland, as she shall be appointed to, by the Commission for Ireland”, ordering that the ship be fitted and furnished as necessary for that service.

Denzil Holles, 1st Baron Holles PC (1599-1680), statesman and writer, best known as one of the five members of parliament whom King Charles I of England attempted to arrest in 1642. He moved to London in 1846, having been elected as an associate of the old Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1843. He was elected a member in 1851. He made extensive tours of Highland scenes and views in the Swiss and Italian Alps were amongst his favourite subjects.- $58

Joseph Lister (1827-1912), surgeon, whose work introduced the antiseptic system into modern surgery, and who developed a commercial serum therapy against diptheria. The subject of Listers testimonial is Dr W. Bullock, head of the Serum Department at the British (Jenner, and later Lister) Institute of Preventive Medicine (founded by Lister and others), and subsequently Professor of Bacteriology at the London Hospital Medical School.- $354

ORLEANS. Louis-Sextius de Jarente de La Bruyère, Bishop. Versailles, 26 January 1763. Louis-Sextius de Jarente de La Bruyère (1706-1788), Bishop of Orleans from 1757. "Well liked in court, he was appointed Minister of Profit Sheets and was responsible for distributing the revenues of the various abbeys, churches and their farmland from 1757 to 1771. During this period, 75 bishoprics and 337 abbeys are attributed, which alludes to the importance of this very coveted and lucrative position. The solicitors crowd around him. . Finding church life mundane, he frequented salons earning a good living. Jarente was the victim of numerous pamphlets accusing him of having had for his mistress Guimard". Thus, at the end of the 1770s, Mlle. Guimard, who was in need of money, had the idea - which may have been suggested to him - to open an "income bureau", offering to forward Jarente requests from clergy for salary increases, these claims with varying bribes depending on the size of the claim." PETTIGREW, Thomas Saville Row, 26 February 1844. Uncommon. Thomas Joseph Pettigrew FRS (1791 1865), sometimes known as "Mummy" Pettigrew, was a surgeon and antiquarian who became an expert on Ancient Egyptian mummies. He became well known in London social circles for his private parties in which he unrolled and autopsied mummies for the entertainment of his guests. The phrase "sed tamen in pretio" is in Latin. It translates to "but still valuable" or "yet of worth." It conveys the idea that something may have a cost or price, but it remains valuable or significant. In life, there are often things that hold intrinsic worth beyond their monetary value.- $257

PRIOR, Sir James. Somerset House (Medical Department), 16 April 1833. Sir James Prior (c.17901869), Irish naval surgeon and writer. He entered the Royal Navy as a surgeon, and sailed from Plymouth in the frigate HMS Nisus on 22 June 1810. His ship was stationed at Mauritius from November 1810 to April 1811, when he had charge of the wounded; and, after visiting the Seychelles Islands, Madras, Mauritius, Java (at the reduction of which by the British in September 1811 he was present), and Batavia, returned to the Cape of Good Hope. His next expedition, also in the Nisus, was to Table Bay (February 1812), St. Helena (January 1813), Rio de Janeiro (October 1813), and Pernambuco (December 1813). By 1815 he was on the coast of La Vendée, and was present at the surrender of Napoleon on 15 July. His works included Voyage in the Indian Seas in the Nisus frigate during 1810 and 1811, published by Sir Richard Phillips in 1820, and included in the first volume of a collection of New Voyages and Travels, and Voyage along the Eastern Coast of Africa (1819), included in the second volume of Phillips's Voyages. Prior's major works were biographies of Edmund Burke and Oliver Goldsmith. Edward Magrath (1799-1856), Secretary of the Athenaeum Club.- $84

Sir George Hamilton Seymour (1797-1880) was minister plenipotentiary to Portugal (1847-1851), residing in Lisbon. It is likely that the clean tears along the edges are disinfection slits.- $97

SCHETKY, John Christian. Royal Naval College [dated 1819 in a later collectors hand]. John Christian Schetky (17781874), Scottish marine painter. Schetky studied art under Alexander Nasmyth. After travelling on the continent, he settled in Oxford, where he taught for six years as a drawing-master. In 1808 he obtained a post in the Royal Military College at Great Marlow; and three years later he was appointed professor of drawing in the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth, where he had ample opportunities for the study of his favourite marine subjects. Following the abolition of the Naval College, he held a similar professorship from 1836 to 1855 at the East India Company's Military Seminary at Addiscombe, Surrey, where the cadets nicknamed him "Sepia Jack". A memoir by his daughter, entitled Ninety Years of Work and Play, was published in 1877.- $58
