Complete Angler, or the Contemplative Man’s Recreation, Being a Discourse of Rivers, Fish-Ponds, Fish , and Fishing . . . .
Walton, Izaak; Charles Cotton; Harris Nicolas. London, 1836 Two quarto volumes, about 11 inches tall, in full green Morocco by J. Wright, with elaborately decorative gilt borders on cover, five raised bands with brown spine labels, extra gilt decorated compartments, gilt decorated dentelles. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. A magnificent copy of the first Pickering edition. From the library of R.B. Adam, his oval bookplate with the bust of Samuel Johnson in the center on the front pastedown of volume I. Adam was a significant collector from Buffalo who built the best Johnson collection in America. Light edge wear to the covers; an inconsequential chip to the author spine label of volume I. Irregular foxing in both volumes: moderately heavy here and there but volume I is largely clean and significant parts of volume II are as well. Some offsetting from engravings, occasionally fairly substantial. Some bookseller notes in pencil on verso of the front endpaper.- $3,000

Old Settlers’ Souvenir Album [Sauk County]
Canfield, William H. Unknown, No Date [1901] Hardback octavo in white cloth with a faux alligator finish. 53 pages plus ads and a portrait of the publisher of the Sauk County Democrat, perhaps the publisher or printer. A scarce early history of an area of south-central Wisconsin, Baraboo being the county seat of Sauk County. Lots of photographic portraits including frontis of the author. An assortment of letters, biographies, minutes of meetings of the Old Settlers' Association. A funeral notice tipped in near the front, and several pages of religious materials by Canfield as well as a pamphlet containing argument on separation of church and state. These extra materials are on different, more acidic, paper but they all appear to have been inserted when the book was bound. Some irregular darkening to the rear covers; extremities modestly worn with the tips worn through to the boards, and the cloth at the front joint (the exterior hinge) is beginning to separate at top and bottom. The binding is sound but the rear endpaper has separation of a couple inches. The extra pages mentioned above are moderately toned. There are, therefore, several flaws, but all are of minor severity.- $350

A short but important look at the end of the Indian Wars in the Dakotas and the period thereafter including the death of Sitting Bull. The rear pastedown was applied somewhat sloppily, showing a crease.- $750

Mrs. Craddock [dated 1903]
William Somerset Maugham 1st printing 1902 but dated 1903 - some of the bound copies of the first printing were allocated for the Colonial edition. They were given a cancel title page stating '1903' instead of the original title page '1902' which was replaced - the idea was that by the time they arrived at the farthest reaches of empire their date remained current - some of these were ultimately issued with no half-title and sold to the Times Book Club with no ads at the rear [see Toole Stott A5a and b.] like this one. In publisher's original petrol blue cloth with titles in gilt to front board and spine and publisher's windmill device stamped to centre of rear board in blind - with fading to spine titles which remain legible however, a little rubbing to spine ends and corners. The binding is sound, tight and square with all page block edges trimmed as required with a hint of spotting. Internally clean with occasioal mark; no inscriptions. A nice copy.- $369

The binding is therefore entirely sound, tight and square. Internally new endpapers; all else original with occasional light mark or stain; there are no inscriptions; 3 pages of publisher's ads following main text at rear as required. Uncommon.- $1,064

There is a little unevenness of colour at front and rear boards. The binding is entirely sound, tight and square with top edge of page block cut and the other two rough trimmed as required. Internally the front flyleaf appears to be absent; the gutters of both eps are split but there is absolutely no movement and there are no inscriptions, bookplates or marks. Besides the interesting incidents of travel included, the book included graphic descriptions of the Klondike region, and accounts of local customs and superstitions, as well as mining methods. - wikipedia- $125

Observations on the Brumal Retreat of the Swallow
Philochelidon. (Forster, Thomas) London, 1808 Sewn pamphlet. 8 1/8" by 6" 32pp. Gathering of pages 19-30 loose otherwise in very good condition. Although not the first, the author uses observation and research to provide evidence that swallows, and also martins and swifts, are "birds of passage" that migrate annually and do not hibernate or overwinter underwater as previously thought. Additional Remarks include a list of translations of the name "swallow" from several languages and also a list of different names, in English, for each particular species, many not now in common use. In 1808, under the signature 'Philochelidon,' he published 'Observations on the Brumal Retreat of the Swallow,' of which the sixth edition appeared, with a catalogue of British birds annexed, in 1817.- Wikisource.- $200

Prohibition Punches
Doran, Roxana B. Philadelphia, 1930 Stated first printing. Hard cover. Octavo. 93pp. Pale purple cloth over boards with gilt lettering. Slight fading at spine otherwise very good. "Several years into the noble experiment (prohibition) Roxana B. Doran wife of James M. Doran, the Commissioner of Industrial Alcohol, earned fleeting fame with the publication of Prohibition Punches (Philadelphia: Dorrance, 1930), the result of a nationwide campaign to popularize fruit drinks. Her own recipe for "1930 Cocktail" was composed of grapefruit juice, pineapple juice, limes and ginger ale, garnished with fruit and a sprig of mint. "Mrs. Doran Introduces New Cocktail at Dinner"- Baltimore Sun [2nd January 1930]. P.2 So that's the background to Harry Craddock's cheekily named "Prohibition Cocktail" in the Savoy Cocktail Book. This one, at least if enjoyed outside the US, was legal, delivered a kick and actually tasted nice. It was everything other prohibition cocktails were not. Even more cheekily, it's almost exactly the same as Craddock's Charlie Lindbergh cocktail: the sole difference is that this recipe calls for a single dash of apricot brandy, not two (the Lindbergh also specifically calls for the proprietary brandy Pricota).- $425

El Salteador, roman de cape et d’épée. Bibliothèque Diamant (sur la couverture d’origine).
DUMAS, Alexandre. Edition originale, 2 volumes in-32; déposé selon le voeu de la loi, propriété des éditeurs. T.I: 225p. T.II: 196p. (Voir Vicaire III, 707). Un seul exemplaire au CCFR. Talvart et Place, 127A. Vicaire II, 718.- $710

A Travel Photograph Album Of England, Germany, South Tyrol And Austria
ANON] A lovely large format photograph album of a tour of England and Wales in 1893. There was also a tour of Bavaria, Salsburg and Innsbruck in 1895. The album starts in 1893 and has 38 photographs (mostly Albumen) of England and Wales. These are mostly large (24cm x 32cm) images. There are some smaller (18.5 cm x 23.5cm). They appear to be commercially purchased photographs. There are also a further 9 smaller (17cm x 22cm and 12cm x 18cm) images of cottages with descriptions on the back. These seem to be personally taken photographs? The trip began with the Needles on the Isle of Wight, (24cm x 32cm) and continued with similar photographs of the Isle of Wight, Tennyson's house, Southsea & Portsmouth, Tintern Abbey. The tour then moved on to Wales, and there are photographs of North and South Wales, with quite a few of Betws-y-coed, and some bridges in the area. The trip moved on to Chester, with a number of photographs of Eaton House in Chester, and Hatfield house. A second part of the album covers a trip in 1895, comprising 23 photographs of Bavaria, Salzburg and Innsbruck. The photographs are all of good condition, still bright, with a touch of fading only. A few have light creasing, or the odd tear where they have come away from the album at some point, but overall a very presentable and attractive album of English and European topography from the 1890's. The album itself is black buckram with leather spine and corners. There is some rubbing to the boards, and some scuffing. A tape repair (with black tape) to the spine. The album measures 37cm x 45 cm. The photographs have hand written annotations below describing the view. There is some staining to the inside boards of the album and a few of the cardboard backing sheets are wavy, but this doesn't really affect the photographs.- $685
