Quarto, about 12 inches tall, in burgundy calf decorated in gilt, five raised spine bands with horseshoes surrounded by a decorative device in four compartments, decorated dentelles, marbled endpapers. 206 pages illustrated by photographs. LIMITED EDITION, #50 OF 250 COPIES. The first "book" is 115 pages, and is titled "American Harness Horses and Horsemen" by Hervey; the second book, by Keller, completes the book and is titled "American Harness Horses and Horsemen of Today". Inside is clean, bright and sound. The covers have ever so slight extremity wear and a modest abrasion to the lower spine. Otherwise this impressive book is lovely with bright gilt.

Very nicely produced, this includes cross references to other bayonet books. Also, a glossary. Photographic detail is very good. There is minor toning to the fore-edges of the pages, but otherwise a clean, sound copy with no sign of wear to the covers. The jacket is unworn, crisp and bright but also very light edge toning.- $375

According to the afterword by Max Brod, this novel was not quite finished. It does, however, end on a more hopeful note than Kafka's other work. Previous owner name on each side of the front endpaper; the endpapers are moderately stained from glue offset. Inside is otherwise clean, bright and soundly bound. The covers show light extremity wear, and the gutters and spine show spotty fading, also the likely effect of glue offset. The salmon jacket is complete but for very shallow chipping at the foot of the spine and the bottom front panel. There is moderate darkening to the spine and edges of the jacket.- $375

Old Settlers’ Souvenir Album [Sauk County]
Canfield, William H. Unknown, No Date [1901] Hardback octavo in white cloth with a faux alligator finish. 53 pages plus ads and a portrait of the publisher of the Sauk County Democrat, perhaps the publisher or printer. A scarce early history of an area of south-central Wisconsin, Baraboo being the county seat of Sauk County. Lots of photographic portraits including frontis of the author. An assortment of letters, biographies, minutes of meetings of the Old Settlers' Association. A funeral notice tipped in near the front, and several pages of religious materials by Canfield as well as a pamphlet containing argument on separation of church and state. These extra materials are on different, more acidic, paper but they all appear to have been inserted when the book was bound. Some irregular darkening to the rear covers; extremities modestly worn with the tips worn through to the boards, and the cloth at the front joint (the exterior hinge) is beginning to separate at top and bottom. The binding is sound but the rear endpaper has separation of a couple inches. The extra pages mentioned above are moderately toned. There are, therefore, several flaws, but all are of minor severity.- $350

The jacket is also a bit undersized or perhaps it is shrinking. Otherwise, a clean, bright and soundly bound copy with an otherwise undamaged jacket. The original shipping box is included. It has a few dings and dents, but sound with the interior cradle intact.- $475

Wright, with elaborately decorative gilt borders on cover, five raised bands with brown spine labels, extra gilt decorated compartments, gilt decorated dentelles. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. A magnificent copy of the first Pickering edition. From the library of R.B. Adam, his oval bookplate with the bust of Samuel Johnson in the center on the front pastedown of volume I. Adam was a significant collector from Buffalo who built the best Johnson collection in America. Light edge wear to the covers; an inconsequential chip to the author spine label of volume I. Irregular foxing in both volumes: moderately heavy here and there but volume I is largely clean and significant parts of volume II are as well. Some offsetting from engravings, occasionally fairly substantial. Some bookseller notes in pencil on verso of the front endpaper.- $3,000

The book has very light extremity wear and very light edge toning to the text, but it is otherwise clean, bright and soundly bound. This hardback edition is a larger format than the original, about 12 x 10 inches. A clean, bright, unworn copy but, while the binding is still sound, the perfect binding is exposed behind the front endpaper.
