Text booklet (printed in Leipzig, 1919) with information on authors and plates tipped to blank sheet at front. Complete with 27 gold-enhanced chromolithographic plates, including color title page. Major work on medieval Jewish manuscript art and important source for the earliest illustrated Hebrew Bible from the East and the collection of Hebrew manuscripts in the Academy of Science Library in Leningrad. Octavo (5-1/2" x 8-1/2") bound by Gray Parrot in quarter vellum and marbled paper, laid in a custom cloth clamshell box. The text was culled from ANIMATE CREATION by Rev. J. G. Wood, 1885. The illustrations consist of 26 wood engravings by Alan James Robinson with the names of the birds hand-lettered by Suzanne Moore. Copy #11 of 50 the Deluxe Edition (of a total edition of 231) printed by Harold Patrick McGrath and SIGNED by Robinson. Leakey was a Kenyan paleoanthropologist, conservationist, and politician whose fossil discoveries at Koobi Fora in a fifteen-year period beginning in the late 1960s included a nearly complete 1.6-million-year-old skeleton of a young male Homo erectus. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the half-title page: "For Nancy with my warmest/regards and appreciation to you/for your support, enthusiasm/and friendship. On the front pastedown is the paper label used in Franklin Roosevelt's miniature book collection, this numbered "1232." ROOSEVELT, Franklin D Cloth in dustwrapper. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the future President on the front endpaper: "Inscribed for Garrett A Roach/with all good wishes from/Franklin D. Roosevelt/October 31 1928." Below his inscription his son, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr. has also INSCRIBED and SIGNED the book "To Albert A. Roach/With best wishes,/Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr." with the date "1-29-49" below in another hand. In his foreword, Roosevelt states: "It is difficult, in the tumult of a political campaign, to set forth facts without bias, but I have tried, in the first part of this little book, to analyze fairly some of the causes that make Alfred E. Smith one of the most interesting Americans of this generation. In no way is this written as a partisan plea. The excuse lies in the deluge of letters coming to me from men and women in every circumstance of life, and from every part of the United States, asking every conceivable kind of question about him." Alas, Smith lost to Herbert Hoover in a landslide a few months later, and the following year the longest and deepest downturn in the history of the United States and the modern industrial economy occurred: The Great Depression. WILDE, Oscar Two quarto volumes (8" x 11"), copy #1485 of 1500 numbered copies. The first volume in black wrappers is the French original illustrated by Andre Derain with gouache drawings on black paper reproduced through the pochoir process and SIGNED by the artist on the colophon page. The other volume, in gilt-decorated red cloth, is the English translation by Lord Alfred Douglas with illustrations from the first edition by Aubrey Beardsley including four omitted from the original. Darkening to the text pages opposite the plates by Derain, as usual. Slight sunning to the spine of the hardcover volume.
