Illustrated with a large folding color frontispiece depicting the impact of the Salvation Army's proposed "Scheme of Social Selection and Salvation" to redress the social evils afflicting England. Printing and the Mind of Man 373. In this important book, published the same year as Stanley's IN DARKEST AFRICA, the founder of the Salvation Army analyzed the causes of vice and poverty and proposed a ten-step remedy, which in large part was carried out. A classic in the literature of poverty and its solutions. 1891 owner name on half-title page; minor wear to spine tips and rubbing to spine edges. Very Good

On the front pastedown is the paper label used in Franklin Roosevelt's miniature book collection, this numbered "1232." ROOSEVELT, Franklin D Cloth in dustwrapper. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the future President on the front endpaper: "Inscribed for Garrett A Roach/with all good wishes from/Franklin D. Roosevelt/October 31 1928." Below his inscription his son, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr. has also INSCRIBED and SIGNED the book "To Albert A. Roach/With best wishes,/Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr." with the date "1-29-49" below in another hand. In his foreword, Roosevelt states: "It is difficult, in the tumult of a political campaign, to set forth facts without bias, but I have tried, in the first part of this little book, to analyze fairly some of the causes that make Alfred E. Smith one of the most interesting Americans of this generation. In no way is this written as a partisan plea. The excuse lies in the deluge of letters coming to me from men and women in every circumstance of life, and from every part of the United States, asking every conceivable kind of question about him." Alas, Smith lost to Herbert Hoover in a landslide a few months later, and the following year the longest and deepest downturn in the history of the United States and the modern industrial economy occurred: The Great Depression. SALOME
WILDE, Oscar Two quarto volumes (8" x 11"), copy #1485 of 1500 numbered copies. The first volume in black wrappers is the French original illustrated by Andre Derain with gouache drawings on black paper reproduced through the pochoir process and SIGNED by the artist on the colophon page. The other volume, in gilt-decorated red cloth, is the English translation by Lord Alfred Douglas with illustrations from the first edition by Aubrey Beardsley including four omitted from the original. Darkening to the text pages opposite the plates by Derain, as usual. Slight sunning to the spine of the hardcover volume. Near Fine with glassine on the wrappers volume only in a Very Good slipcase with minor splitting and edgewear- $625
