Two Illustrated Letters Signed
A prolific and popular illustrator, Church often included fanciful animal drawings in his letters. Here, he has illustrated both letters with a full length playful bear. The first letter, Dec. 8, 1908, written to "Dear Toady" asks if he sent "that sweet birthday note. It was awful nice.to remember that Old Bear up in Carnegie Hall." Church shows the seated bear in glasses accepting a letter from a cherub with a robin atop a rabbit asking, "Wasn't it nice in Today?" Below the signature he writes, "Would you let me in if I called?" The second incomplete letter includes the last page with drawing in the center and signature. "at your disposal. I think Central Park too with be the best place to go." Church draws a smiling full length bear dancing with a barefoot young woman with robins chirping in the background. " He makes reference to "dancing the Tango" in the letter and perhaps that is the reason he drew this dancing pair. Pencil docketing at lower margin. Condition: slight margin tear at left center fold and mounting residue on verso. Tear at upper right corner.

[see George Herriman biography on line] Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse began as space fillers for The Family Upstairs then expanded into their own comic strip. Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pages, in French, on one 4to sheet of personalized stationery, Paris, September 13, 1932. Clair wrote and produced the musical comedy scored by French composer Georges Auric (1899-1983). Clair begins the letter with a self deprecating paragraph for either replying twice to Auric's letter or not responding at all. The letter refers to payment for the music. "After accusing them of having done nothing to promote our music or launch our songs, I pretended that they alone were responsible for a situation which is at least as bad for them as ti is for us.you and I would certainly agree.that [Max} Eshig [music publisher] agree to pay us a 2,000 franc premium for each edited tune as mentioned in our contracts. And since there are still twenty to thirty pieces to . the conversation did not go any further." Clair signs in full, "Rene Clair." COVARRUBIAS, MIGUEL Covarrubias draws a pencil sketch of his face on a round doily. He signs the sketch in printed capital letters, "COVARRUBIAS." The sketch is framed in a rough hewn folk art like painted wooden oval frame and laid onto a gold and green painted wooden background. The sketch is rendered in lighter pencil than the darker signature. The actual drawing is sharper than the photograph shown here. Covarrubias moved to New York on a grant from the Mexican Government in 1924. He is renown for his drawings that captured the cultural activity of the Harlem Renaissance in his book, "Negro Drawings." (1927). He was a regular illustrator on the covers for "Vanity Fair," "Vogue," and "The New Yorker," designed costumes for Josephine Baker, and generally popularized the art and cultures of the Americas and of Bali. He was interested in the ethnology of Mexican culture and posited that Mayan culture was preceded by Olmec culture, discounted at first but now known to be accurate. It is thought that his stylistic concerns drew him to study Mexican and also Balinese ethnography. Although still regarded as a caricaturist and illustrator since the majority of his output falls into these categories, Covarrubias is being reconsidered as a multidimensional Modernist working in many forms.- $1,210
