Previous owner's bookplate neatly affixed to the inside front cover. The text is clean and unmarked. This is the first volume of Dreiser's "trilogy of desire" and introduces Frank Cowperwood, a captain of Capitalism. First edition, first printing.

It is the artist's intention to comment on the fact that we learn very little from history and are forced to repeat the same mistakes; that advertisements for five hundred dollar shoes sit cheek by jowl with news of the latest disasters; that all items, in any language, seem to carry the same weight, and that they are all, in a sense, disposable."
