Original mottled calf, gilt spine in six compartments. Spine extremities worn and front hinge starting, but quite sound. Front free endpaper lacking. Small paper repair on a blank portion of the title, likely removing the name of a previous owner, and a small repair at the bottom blank margin of pp. 33/34. Some occasional text foxing. This is the scarce first edition of Jesuit scholar Gouye's (1650-1725) first book, a report of his scientific observations made on his voyage and stay in Siam before traveling on to China. He makes observations on the animals of Siam, on eclipses, mathematical calculations of latitude & longitude, and geography. Currently there is no other copy for sale on-line. The last auction record was 2004 (2,160 GBP). There is one copy (2 listings but the same copy) of his second report of his observations published in 1692, a briefer work of 113pp., for $15,000. This run lacking Vol. XVIII, No. 2 and Vol. XIX, No. 1 and No. 2. This important journal started in 1950 as "The Amateur Book Collector," until the summer of 1956. At that time (Volume VII, No. 1) it became THE AMERICAN BOOK COLLECTOR. The 6 first years were published in two different sizes, in a newspaper-like format, then switched to a uniform illustrated wrapper format. All of the issues from Volume VII to the final issue are housed in 6 big slipcases. It is very unusual to find a complete run of this journal. Platina, Bartholomaeus Folio. Complete with 136 leaves including the final blank. A wide margined copy. Capital letters unrubricated. Original Italian oak boards, with later sheep spine with two black morocco spine labels, spine worn and lower 2 inches of front and back hinge cracked, but quite sound overall. Remnants of fore-edge clasps (clasps lacking). Last leaves with small inner marginal stains. Some occasional light dampstains or foxing. Title in a contemporary hand on rear oak board and fore-edge. Housed in a rust cloth folding box with morocco spine label. A very influential and popular reference work for centuries. Platina (d. 1481), the librarian of the Vatican, wrote the first medieval chronicle of the papacy, in effect, the official history of the Roman Pontiffs. It was first printed in 1479. Our edition is the third printed. The printer, Johannes Vercellensis, is usually associated with Venice, but he printed 9 books (per the ISTC) in Treviso, starting in 1480. In this copy the very large folding map of the Volga River found at p. 112 has been divided in two, the second half bound at p. 126, with a slight loss at the fold where they were divided. Engraved table of the Ruthenian alphabet in text. 19th century brown morocco spine over old marbled boards (rubbed). Small chip at the top of spine otherwise an attractive copy. This is an odd copy, quite complete, but with certain preliminaries for the first part bound at front of the second part. The second edition revised of the English translation first published in 1662, made from a 1659 version in French. It contains material not found in the original German edition of 1656 and 1658. An important account of Central Asia, including Persia and Russia and the East Indies. The Duke of Holstein's embassies were to negotiate trade. The greatly revised "New Edition" with extensive revisions by the great orientalist Charles Wilkins (Richardson died in 1795). The work was originally printed in 2 folio volumes in 1777-1780 in Oxford. Richardson also wrote A SPECIMEN OF PERSIAN POETRY (1774), and both an Arabic Grammar (1776) and a Persian Grammar (1771). The first volume is Arabic and Persian words translated to English, and the second volume English words translated to Arabic and Persian.- $2,000
