WILDE, Oscar First Edition of this title, Wilde's second collection of stories, followingThe Happy Prince & Other Tales.The design and decoration of the book are by C. Ricketts & C.H. Shannon. This is one of only 1000 copies printed. A Very Good copy of this scarce title which comprises four quite beautiful fairy tales:The Young King, The Birthday of the Infanta, The Fisherman and His Soul, and The Star-Child.Although Wilde's fairy tales were seemingly for children, the author in fact intended them more for the attention of adults. He is quoted as saying that the stories were intended neither for the British child or the British public. Bound in original publisher's cloth binding, with title and author on what is now a rather faded cream colored front board, the copy has ornate designs in light red, and a peacock, fountain, and fruit basket all in gilt. In summation, a quite worn copy of this charming Wilde title, and thus priced accordingly. .

Arguably, this item is the single most important copy of the First Edition of Wilde's painful accounting of the effect of social débâcle and imprisonment: the famed Robert Ross copy. The only work Wilde wrote in prison and the last work in prose he ever wrote, the manuscript of which Wilde entrusted to his dear friend, Robert [Robbie] Ross, his sometime lover, most stalwart supporter, and writer of this book's Preface. Avery good copy, albeit quite heavily foxed on the preliminary pages, yet the book's 151 pages following the Preface (plus the Methuen ads following) are quite clean and presentable. .- $950

STEINBECK, John In 1944, as the Allies were advancing towards the Low Countries following the Normandy landings, a Limited Edition of Steinbeck's The Moon Is Downwas translated and clandestinely published in Holland. There were several illustrations included, specifically for this edition. Since Steinbeck's book was intended to promote resistance to the German occupying forces, it was published with pseudonyms for both the translator and illustrator. The book was not published again until the war's end, and then only in a regular trade edition. This highly desirable, scarce copy is Number 703 of only 1025 copies. . STOKER, Bram First Edition of this odd collection of histories of 'famous cases of imposture.' Perhaps the most remarkable of these fascinating case histories is "The Bisley Boy," in which Stoker relates the theory that young Elizabeth I died as a child in the town of Bisley, and was quickly substituted for a male child, who went on to rule England masquerading as a female. This is an extremely scarce INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY by Stoker to Maude Alethea Stanley (1833-1915), daughter of politician Lord Stanley, 2nd Baron Stanley of Aderley. She was a pioneer in the field of women's welfare and suffrage, and devoted much effort to improving conditions in slums and asylums. She was also the much-loved maiden aunt of philosopher Bertrand Russell. A scarce and highly valued collectible.- $7,500
