Period green calf and marbled boards, with new period style spine, contrasting leather label. A very handsome copy. The author was a newspaper correspondent aboard the Pandora, and describes the voyage in the company of Captain Allen Young during 1875 and 1876 in search of a Northwest Passage. Document contains an "Act for confining, for a limited Time, the Trade between the Ports of the United States of America, and his Majesty's Subjects in the Island of Newfoundland, to Bread, Flour, Indian Corn, and Live Stock, to be imported in none but British-built Ships, actually belonging to British Subjects, and navigated according to Law, clearing out from the Ports of His Majesty's European Dominions, and furnished with a Licence [sic] according to the Form hereunto annexed." Also includes the template for the mentioned license. This Act is a reaction to the British losing the American War of Independence, thus "punishing" American enterprises. Maroon padded faux leather, gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Large folding map in pocket, numerous maps throughout. Very clean within. Fine. An essential, easy to use description of all major and minor explorations of the Arctic and sub-Arctic, starting with the apocryphal St. Brendan's reach of North America. Also includes the Viking voyages, the search for the North-West Passage, the search for John Franklin, and more. Very useful roster of men's names. Extensive bibliography. A later edition was updated, but it is far more difficult to read and use due to its size and format. We recommend this edition. Marbled endpapers. Marbled edges. Engraved bookplate from 1855. Trivial foxing to a few plates, text clean and crisp. A handsome, well preserved copy. Very good. In the hopes of discovering a North-West Passage, David Buchan, Frederick Beechey and John Franklin sailed from the Shetland Islands into western and northern waters of Svalbard, returning along the edge of the Greenland pack ice. Beechey's narrative describes ice conditions, surveys carried out in northwestern Spitsbergen, and the attempts to establish colonies on West Spitsbergen and Jan Mayen while wintering there. Beechey also provides a brief account of the progress and difficulties of earlier voyages to discover a North-East Passage near West Spitsbergen and Novaya Zemlya. Franklin commanded the Trent with Beechey as his second-in-command. Apparently there were relatively few copies printed as there was a twenty-five year gap between the return of the expedition and the publication of this work. Grosz, George. Berlin: Malik Verlag, 1923. Edition C, Ausgabe. Folio. 35.5 x 27cm. Original printed stiff wrappers, with overlapping yapped edges at top and bottom edges. 100 listed plates including 16 in color. Unpaginated. Exterior thick wrappers show light wear and sporadic spotting. Some minor professional repair at front free endpaper in the gutter. Pages and plates are very clean. Binding is sound. Small repair on front free endpaper. Very good. Grosz was a founder of the Berlin Dada movement. His drawings use satire to make fun of bourgeois during the Weimar Republic. From Wikipedia: Grosz did much to create the image most have of Berlin and the Weimar Republic in the 1920s. Corpulent businessmen, wounded soldiers, and prostitutes were some of his great subjects. His draftsmanship was excellent although the works for which he is best known adopt a deliberately crude form of caricature in the style of Jugend. All pages and plates complete. Alastair (1887 - 1969) was the pseudonym of Hans Henning Otto Harry Baron von Voigt. A German artist, musician, and mime, Alastair was born into nobility. After joining a circus and studying mime, Alastair explored other artistic mediums, including illustration. His artistic career was launched by the publication of Forty-Three Drawings by Alastair. John Lane (1854 - 1925) founded The Bodley Head, a small controversial publishing house. His three sons carried on his publishing legacy, creating Penguin Books in 1935. Overall very good. James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez (1757 - 1836) was an admiral of the British Royal Navy. He served as the second-in-command under Sir Horatio Nelson during the famous Battle of Nile - a significant victory in British naval history, won against the French Republic (and then-General Napoleon Bonaparte). Following the victory in Egypt, Saumarez was given command of the HMS Caesar and was instrumental in securing another victory for the British in the Battle of Algeciras against Spain (as depicted on the fore-edge paintings). Although Sir John Ross is best known for his exploits as an Arctic explorer, he also fought Napoleon's navies in several engagements. Ross, in fact, served under Admiral de Suamarez in 1803 on board the "Grumpus" during Baltic campaign. It was after the Napoleonic Wars ended that Ross commanded a British Admiralty expedition to the Arctic in 1818 in an attempt to discover the North West Passage.- $1,950

Macdonald, an architect, had much to do with researching the original Fort Edmonton and contributing to its later re-erection. He provides a detailed study of the interactions of the Northwest Co. and the H.B.C. in the early 1800s. Quoting from diaries and letters, he describes the history of the early explorers and traders who visited and stayed in Edmonton. Includes the errata and a two page printed leaf with book reviews from the Beaver Magazine, and The Edmonton Journal. Very nice association.- $100

These were profoundly altered by the coming of the white women in the 1820s and 1830s. Sylvia Van Kirk got her PhD at the University of London, England.
