THREE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT BOOKS. The only one dated belonged to Edith Lane, Stow on the Wold, and is dated Jan. 21st 1885, the other two have owner names, John F Sutton of Selby College Birmingham and Hugh Williams. A mixture of lessons, teacher instruction, school management, and a few mss hymns by Edith and George Lane in 3 text books measuring between 9 and 8.2 x 7.3 and 6.5 inches. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (7.6 x 5.1 inches). Illustrated frontispiece of a map of the Azanian Empire. A fine clean and fresh copy in original black and red snakeskin patterned cloth, with the spine lettered in gilt. Some very minor rubbing to the extremities of the cloth and a hint of fading to the red of the spine but overall a near fine example with the gilt still very bright and vibrant. Originally published in 1931, Shepard coloured his own line illustrations for this edition. He also at the same time coloured his illustrations for the Winnie the Pooh books of A. A. Milne. A little rubbing and bumping to the board edges but overall a near fine clean copy in publishers tan cloth boards with blind stamped illustration of Toad smoking a cigar to front board. Spine lettered in gilt. Original full colour dustwrapper has just a hint of fading to the spine but is generally bright and clean and with the original price still intact on the front inner flap. Compartments fully ruled, decorated with start and hearts and lettered in gilt. Elaborate star and heart design to both boards, within a highly decorative border roll. Board edge corners ruled in gilt. Inner dentelles fully decorated in gilt with stars and hearts and floral borders, surrounding white Moire silk centre pieces. Silk endpapers. All edges gilt. Front board with raised circular Ganesha device in gilt. Top edge gilt. A wonderful copy that looks unread, with the cloth fine and the gilt bright and fresh. Some offsetting to the endpapers and a neat previous owner name, dated Christmas 1910, to the front free endpaper. There is one small black ink mark and some very light spotting to the fore edge of the pages, just a hint of spotting to the first few pages, but generally the text pages are fine, crisp and clean throughout. Pages a little musty smelling otherwise a very near fine and superior copy. ------ Contains the Poem 'If'. Kipling's most enduring work of verse. A poll taken by the BBC in the UK in 2005 voted it as Britain's favourite Poem, polling twice as many votes as the number 2 choice, Lord Tennyson's The Lady of Shallot. Originally written in 1895, IF was inspired by the actions of Dr. Leander Starr Jameson, a British Officer whose forces were defeated by the Boers in 1895, but who was portrayed as a victorious hero by the British press, the poem is a powerful masterclass in maintaining the British stiff upper lip. -- Richards A242. FOUR VOLUMES. 8vo. (8.5 x 5.4 inches). Copper engraved portrait frontis in volume one, still with the original tissue guard. Complete with all half titles. A few small worm holes to a couple of the volumes and some foxing to the text pages throughout but still a very good set in attractive contemporary full tan calf bindings. Spines with raised bands, the compartments ruled and numbered in gilt. Red title labels decorated and lettered in gilt. Two hinges are cracked but holding firm. Overall a very good set in highly attractive early bindings and published in the same year as the two volume first edition. THE PLAYS.
Reprints of 1926 pocket editions. 12 volumes. Complete. 8vo. (6.9 x 4.5 inches). An attractive set in publishers delux limp leather bindings with elaborate gilt decorated and lettered spines. Gilt stamped signature of George Bernard Shaw on the front boards. Top edges gilt. Housed in the publishers original drop front box with velvet padding inside the top panel and the author's signature stamped in gilt to outside of the top panel. The box is just a little rubbed but has done a great job of keeping the books in very good to fine condition, aside from one volume, Translations and Tomfooleries which has small areas of loss to the bottom of the boards, and a couple with minor fading. Marbled endpapers. Silk page markers. A very good, bright set. Rare in this delux binding and original publishers boxes. Peter Pan is the 4th printing of this edition. A complete set as available in 1931, all housed in the publishers two original dark blue paper covered boxes with the author's monogram stamped in gilt on the top panels. The boxes are a little rubbed and have some splits, without loss, to 3 of the edges on one lid and one corner on the plays box, but are generally very good and have done a great job of keeping the books in fine condition. 18 volumes issued by Hodder and 3 by Cassells.
