Green dust jacket, lettered in white with colour pictorial wrap-around illustration; 1" closed tears at top front near each fold (no creasing); dampstains to bottom edge at folds (approx. 1" deep, rising 1.5" at rear and 3.5" at front) surprisingly not affecting volume at all. A fine copy in very good dust jacket. The True Life of Capt. Sir Richard F. Burton .
"Written by his niece . with the authority and approval of the Burton family"; portrait frontispiece. Publisher's coarser light blue cloth, ¼" shorter and narrower than some copies, due to closer trimming of the top margin of the text block (this matches Penzer's 7½" height - some copies measure 7¾"; priority is not known); gilt lettering and Arabic device decoration on spine. Cloth somewhat soiled on spine, dulling the titling, and a bit rubbed at extremities; front free endpapers toned, contents otherwise clean and tight. A near fine copy of this biography written to counter Lady Burton's, of which the Burton family did not approve. (Penzer, p.311). Tales from The Gullistan or Rose-Garden of the Sheikh Sa’di of Shirâz.

Publisher's black cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; small tear, affecting "TA" of title, repaired; corners bumped; light rubbing resulting in minor loss at extremities. Contents clean and tight. Near fine. NB. * Translation, here attributed to Burton, is actually by his friend Rehatsek (see Penzer p. 162); Burton is sometimes cited as its editor. Sa'di (Sheikh Muslih-uddin Sa'di Shirazi), a 13th century Persian poet, wrote the Gulistan ca.1259. It is a collection of poetry and prose meant to both entertain and enlighten its readers on life, morals and truth. "The great beauty of his style is its elegant simplicity" (cf. p. vii); Rehatsek's English translation, more than any other, faithfully reflects the original. The BehÄristÄn (Abode of Spring).

Translation, usually attributed to Burton, is actually by his friend Rehatsek (see Penzer p. 162). JÄmi (Nur ad-DÄ«n Abd ar-RahmÄn JÄmi) was a 15th century Persian mystic, scholar and poet; he wrote the BehÄristÄn, modelled on the GulistÄn, in 1487. The Hindu Art of Love (Ars Amorica Indica), or, Ananga-Ranga .
Gilt-lettered full vellum, in facsimile of the Kama Shastra edition; now somewhat splayed, yet bright and clean. A fine, but scarce, reprint [pirate?] of Burton's translation. Originally produced by the Kama Shastra Society in 1885, following a small limited printing (4-6 copies) in 1873; the translation is credited to "A.F.F. &. B.F.R.", Arbuthnot's and Burton's initials in reverse. Ice Rink Skating.
Richardson, T.D. Illustrated with several photographs of British and international champions. Original light blue cloth, printed in dark blue; with spine leaning slightly and minor sunning along edge of ends thereof; light toning to endpapers. Colour pictorial (female skater performing) dust jacket with a hint of soiling on rear; a bit rubbed on front and corners; light creasing and chipping at corners and spine ends; several closed edge tears, with resultant creasing. Very good. (Richardson published an earlier book with the same title, through the same publisher, in 1938. Although there is a great deal of overlap between the two books, they are also substantially different, this one seeming to concentrate on indoor rinks. They are therefore separate entities rather than different editions of the same title.).- $15

Inner half of endpapers age-toned; contents nice and clean. Matching decorative dust jacket a bit rubbed at spine ends and corners, and dusty at edges. A near fine copy. This discussion of social clubs of all kinds, with a section on "Games and Conviviality" discussing clubs formed around all sorts of sporting activities, including rugby, cricket, tennis and golf - the latter, as expected from Darwin, playing a special part.- $15
