Viking, 1965. First Edition (first printing). The celebrated third novel by the author of BUTCHER'S CROSSING and AUGUSTUS, the story of a man born into a dirt-poor farming family who discovers a love of literature and follows his passion only to encounter a succession of disappointments. The book was published to limited commercial success and remained in relative obscurity for years. Over the past decades, it has come to be regarded as one of the most important twentieth-century novels, exhibiting a "quiet perfection." Near Fine/Very Good. As is often the case, the dust jacket spine has faded from bright yellow to a yellowish-grey color. Chipping at the head of the jacket spine and closed tears to the folds. Slight foxing to the top edge. This copy is inscribed by Williams on the front free end paper, as follows: "For Gordon Weaver, who will get more than a stone -- with warm regards, John Williams/Denver, 1976." From the estate of Gordon Weaver in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Weaver received his Ph.D. from the University of Denver in 1970, where (the author) Professor John Williams was the director of the creative writing program. . Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good.
