The Frugal Housewife Dedicated to Those Who Are Not Ashamed of Economy
[Child, Lydia Marie]. (pseudonym: The Author of Hobomok) 120 pages. 18 x 12 cm. To Which Are Added Hints to Persons of Moderate Fortune. First Published in the Massachusetts Journal. Corrected and Arranged by the Author. Owner's signature in beautiful calligraphic hand on front free flyleaf: "Almira Towne/Kennebunk Port 1831." A gorgeous large bookplate on front pastedown: Erasmus Hall no. 599. An outstanding example of the work of [Peter?] Maverick (signed in engraving), the Master of three generations of noted family of engravers. Peter Maverick (1780-1831) was one of three printmaker sons of a printmaker. A noted engraver of bookplates, maps, bank notes and book and magazine illustrations. The Frugal Housewife was a very popular household and cookery book, authored by Lydia Marie Child and aimed at an audience of limited means. It went through many editions. Title later changed to "The American Frugal Housewife," in order to avoid confusion with the English counterpart by Susannah Carter. The combination of this illustrious cookbook and a Maverick-engraved bookplate produces a book of extreme rarity. [ALLEN, American Book-plates 257] [LOWENSTEIN 131]. Covers detached, lacks spine. Some foxing with first four signatures loose. Polished Contemporary Full Calf. Very good- $500

[HANDMADE] [REPURPOSED] [COOKBOOK] RECIPES
25.5 x 13.5 cm. Unattributed homemade cookbook from the mid-century. It looks as though our author used black wallpaper to cover the outer boards of a book to make it her own. The book consists of nine envelopes, each decorated with cut out images of food. For instance the Soup Envelope is decorated with a bowl of tomato soup and Campbell Soup cans along with a typed title and verse: "Soups - A bowl of soup, Right from the fire, Is a dish of which, I never tire." Envelopes: Salads and Dressings, Breads/Sandwiches/Rolls, Fish/Poultry/Meats, Vegetables, Cakes/Fillings, Pies and Pastries, Canned Fruits, Miscellaneous: "If you want recipes, Of another kind, Look here and, See what you find." Our unidentified author painted a scene of a cabin in the woods on the cover and drilled holes in the covers to use as an attachment device. One envelope, Pies and Pastries, is filled with cut out recipes and one handwritten recipes. Alas, the other envelopes are empty. Obviously this was a labor of love, made by a creative individual. Black painted cloth covered boards. Good- $125
