W. Somerset Maugham 3 volumes, all 1st printings - in recent half morocco with leather corners and with 5 raised bands, black title labels and gilt titles and ruling with publication date at base to each spine. The boards of the original publisher's binding have been retained with titles stamped in gilt towards top and publisher's Islamic arch logo at bottom right hand corner of front board in blind. All bindings remain fresh, clean and bright and the joints are completely unworn. All bindings are sound, tight and square with just a little light spotting to the leading page block edge of volume 3. Internally there are no marks or inscriptions, bookplates or anything else and each volume has matching and very attractive marbled endpapers. A lovely 1st edition set that would grace any library. 1st printings are becoming increasingly uncommon.- $1,404

William Somerset Maugham Very scarce 1st printing, 1st issue of the author's 5th novel [Toole Stott A7 - there were only 3000 copies] in publisher's original dark petrol blue cloth with titles to spine in gilt and titles and Islamic arch motif stamped to front board in gilt and publisher's windmill logo to rear board in blind - with original spine professionally and inconspicuously re-laid and with original eps retained. There is a little unevenness of colour at front and rear boards.The binding is entirely sound, tight and square with top edge of page block cut and the other two rough trimmed as required. Internally the front flyleaf appears to be absent; the gutters of both eps are split but there is absolutely no movement and there are no inscriptions, bookplates or marks. Mrs. Craddock [dated 1903]
William Somerset Maugham 1st printing 1902 but dated 1903 - some of the bound copies of the first printing were allocated for the Colonial edition. They were given a cancel title page stating '1903' instead of the original title page '1902' which was replaced - the idea was that by the time they arrived at the farthest reaches of empire their date remained current - some of these were ultimately issued with no half-title and sold to the Times Book Club with no ads at the rear [see Toole Stott A5a and b.] like this one. In publisher's original petrol blue cloth with titles in gilt to front board and spine and publisher's windmill device stamped to centre of rear board in blind - with fading to spine titles which remain legible however, a little rubbing to spine ends and corners. The binding is sound, tight and square with all page block edges trimmed as required with a hint of spotting. Internally clean with occasioal mark; no inscriptions. A nice copy.- $369
