Spell of the Rockies
Mills, Enos A. First edition, signed by Enos Mills on the front endpaper and dated September 6, 1917. Gray cloth boards with white lettering on cover and spine. Imprint of a bighorn sheep in front of a mountain peak on the cover. Illustrated endpapers and top edge is dyed gray. Previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. Front board has been burned along the bottom edge, affecting a 1 x ¼ inch section and the bottom corner of one quarter of the text block. Boards have moderate toning along spine, light wear and soiling. Other than the burned corners, the text block is clean. Overall good condition. Naturalist and author Enos Mills (1870-1922) is remembered as the "Father of Rocky Mountain National Park'' for his role in its creation. Adventures of a Nature Guide
Mills, Enos A. First edition with a Denver Post newspaper clipping from August 1998 about Enos Mills' cabin in Rocky Mountain National Park. A small errata sheet is laid in at page 129, noting a correction to the altitude printed on the facing plate. Green cloth boards have gilt lettering on the front board and top edge is gilt; lettering is faded along the spine. The rear gutter is cracked and the cloth of the rear board is torn about 2.5 inches. Boards have light wear along edges, sunning along the spine and soiling. Text block has light toning and is holding together fairly well. Overall good condition. Naturalist and author Enos Mills (1870-1922) is remembered as the "Father of Rocky Mountain National Park" for his role in its creation. This book, published five years after Rocky Mountain National Park was established, contains essays about Mills' experiences as a nature guide along with many b&w plates. ; Book; B&W Plates; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 271 pp- $150

View from the Residence of Chas. Crocker, Esq. S. F. [Boudoir Card]
Watkins, Carleton 19th century boudoir card. No publication date, produced between 1880 and 1888 when Watkins' studio was located at 427 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. Mount measures approximately 8.5 x 5.25 inches. Title and publisher imprint is printed in black in the margin below the image. View is numbered "B 3642." Verso is blank. One inch crack to bottom edge, partially impacting image; moderate soiling, mostly to margins and verso; minor wear to edges; mount has slight inward bend. Image is very crisp. Overall, good condition. Carleton Watkins (1829-1916) was born in New York and moved to California during the gold rush in 1851. There Watkins became interested in photography, working in James Ford's gallery before starting his own studio. His mammoth plate photos of Yosemite brought him international renown, but a financial panic in the mid-1870s caused the loss of his studio and his negatives. He decided to re-photograph his famous shots for a "New Series" of views. This boudoir card comes from that later body of work. It shows a sprawling view of San Francisco as seen from the Nob Hill mansion of Charles Crocker, a founder of the Central Pacific Railroad. Mautz 179.- $75

Tracht, W. A. Late 19th century boudoir card. Title, number, and date appear in white in the negative. View is numbered "498" and dated Aug. 31, 1897. Mount measures approximately 8 x 5 inches while the image measures about 7.25 x 4.5 inches. Verso has the photographer's imprint in purple ink. Moderate soiling; minor wear to mount; very light scratching to image. Image is crisp. Overall, good condition. William A. Tracht was a photographer and painter who operated a studio in Manitou Springs from 1898-1901. This image shows two men riding burros on their way to Colorado's Klondike Mountain. Abbey, Edward First Peregrine Smith edition from 1981, originally published in 1968. Inscribed by Abbey on the front free endpaper, dated 1983 in Gallup, New Mexico. Light orange boards with black lettering on cover and spine. Slight rubbing to edges; minor wrinkling to back joint. Orange pictorial dust jacket with black lettering on cover and spine. Jacket is wrapped in mylar and is not price clipped. Spine is faded; minor chipping and wear to edges; a bit of scratching. Rear hinge is cracked but binding is still fairly tight. Interior is clean. This edition features drawings by Abbey as well as an additional four-page author's introduction. Also includes black-and-white photos by Gibbs Smith on a small section of plates and the endpapers. Edward Abbey (1927-1989) was an acclaimed writer and cantankerous environmentalist. This is one of his classic books, a collection of meditations on Utah's canyon country drawn from the two seasons that Abbey worked as a park ranger in what was then Arches National Monument. The book blends a profound love for wilderness and a bitter abhorrence for those who would desecrate it.
