Kaprow's important book on the then emerging field of performance art. It has the special merit of documenting this movement from within, at the beginning, in real time. He had originally written this work in 1959-1960, revised it in 1961, and revised it yet again for its first publication, here. Alluding to the rapidly shifting art scene, he notes in the Preface that "If I wrote it again it would be a different book." Bradbury, Ray (1920-2012) A beautiful first edition of Ray Bradbury's second book. This classic is a collection of linked stories about the exploration and colonization of Mars by Earthlings trying to avoid nuclear obliteration. Ref. CURREY p. 56; PRINGLE 3. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Bound in pale green cloth over boards with burgundy spine titles. Hint of browning to spine. Shallow bumps to spine ends, fore corners sharp. Small bookstore label at lower edge of rear pastedown, adjacent to a 2" square of faint staining. Interior is clean and bright. Graham’s Lady’s and Gentleman’s Magazine.Volume XXIII
[Poe, Edgar Allan, et al] The July through December 1843 issues of Graham's Magazine, of which Edgar Allan Poe had recently been editor. This volume contains three reviews by Poe, including his review of James Fenimore Cooper's historical novel, "Wyandotté." It was while editor of Graham's that Poe developed his bitingly sarcastic style of literary criticism, and that style is full flower here. Not surprisingly, Cooper gets the least amount of acid from Poe's pen. Also included in this volume are four poems by a young poet named Elizabeth B. Barrett. Her 1844 volume "Poems" would lead to her meeting another poet, Robert Browning. A famous literary courtship ensued, and Elizabeth Barrett Barrett became Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Other notable contributions include two poems by James Russell Lowell and a two-part biography of American Revolutionary War naval hero, John Paul Jones, by James Fenimore Cooper This volume includes several engraved portraits and other illustrations, some of which are colored. Mild rubs to extremities, occasional foxing and browning inside. Very good to near fine overall. Marbled paper over boards with leather spine and fore corners. Octavo. iv, 320 pages- $288

USS Shenandoah (ZR-1) Ohio Crash Scene
[Navy Airships] [Clements, Rell Sam] Uncommon original silver gelatin panoramic photograph of the Ohio crash of the U. S. Navy's first rigid airship, the USS Shenandoah. The Shenandoah encountered a severe storm over Ohio on the morning of September 3, 1925, the violent updraft of which quickly carried the ship to an altitude that ruptured her gas bags and resulted in turbulence that broke the ship into three pieces. This photograph shows the aft section of the ship, in which 18 crewmen survived the crash. The Shenandoah was on her 57th flight, intended as a promotional visit to the Midwest from her home base at Lakehurst, New Jersey. Lakehurst-based photographer Rell Sam Clements, known for his panoramic photographs, apparently captured this image a short time after the crash, as souvenir hunters would soon carry off most of the ship's fabric skin. We have not found this particular view of the crash reproduced elsewhere. This amazing historical photograph is nicely matted and framed, ready to hang. The Negro Question: Attitude of the Progressive Party Toward the Colored Race
[Roosevelt, Theodore (1858-1919)] Campaign piece from Theodore Roosevelt's unsuccessful bid for reelection to the Presidency in 1912. Here he confronts racial issues as nominee of the Progressive or "Bull Moose" party. Roosevelt founded the party after losing the Republican nomination earlier in the year. This piece contains Roosevelt's statement at the National Progressive Convention, August 6, 1912, at the Coliseum in Chicago, his letter to Julian Harris of Atlanta (son of "Uncle Remus" author, Joel Chandler Harris) and his editorial on the Progressive National Convention at Chicago. Ref. WHEELOCK p. 15. Printed self-wraps bound with a single staple along spine. There is a slight dampstain at head of spine, visible more or less throughout the pamphlet. Otherwise fine. Watch and Ward
James, Henry, Jr. (1843-1916) Henry James's first novel, originally published serially in the Atlantic Monthly in 1871, and here for the first time in book form. The simple and melodramatic plot caused James to essentially disown this work, instead referring to the far more substantial "Roderick Hudson" as his first novel as his career took off. This is one of the 1,000 copies in the first printing of May 29, 1878, in bright green cloth (Edel, binding "a"). Ref. EDEL and LAWRENCE, A6. Near fine, with a few light extremity rubs. So Red the Nose, or, Breath in the Afternoon
North, Sterling and Carl Kroch A collection of 30 cocktail recipes contributed by noteworthy writers of the early 20th century. The title is a spoof on Stark Young's 1934 Civil War novel, "So Red the Rose." The drinks herein are named after the contributing authors' books, such as Ernest Hemingway's cocktail, "Death in the Afternoon," Rockwell Kent's "Salamina," Harriet Monroe's "Poets and Their Art," Theodore Dreiser's "American Tragedy," etc. Each cocktail recipe is accompanied by humorous drinking notes and a caricature of the contributing writer by Roy Nelson. Scarce in this condition with original dust jacket. Ref. NOLING p. 312. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Bound in plum-colored cloth over boards with title and device in silver gilt on upper board. Hersh had many well-placed sources, and also combed the 25,000 pages of the Army's undisclosed Peers Report into the command responsibility for the massacre. Tears (Signed)
Balabanoff, Angelica (1878-1965) Poems of political struggle, published while Balabanoff was in exile in New York during World War II. She was a Russian-born Italian Jew who had worked with Lenin, Trotsky, and Zinoviev, and with Socialist leaders in Italy before being forced into exile by the rise of Mussolini. Balabanoff has inscribed and signed this copy on a preliminary blank leaf: "For the comrades / O + R Fox / Thanking them for their / warm hospitality / and hoping to meet them / again and again! / W. D.C. 8-27-43 / [signature]." Introduction by Arturo Giovannitti. Dust jacket features lengthy blurbs by Charles Edward Russell and others. Bound in thin, flexible, red velvet-covered boards with upper board titled in gilt, which has darkened. Some shallow bumping to the Yapp edges of covers.
