Engraved double page (23 1/2" x 20 1/2 "), partially hand colored, large title uncolored cartouche in upper right corner. One sheet of a two-sheet map, but has a complete appearance. Expert tape repairs on verso at centerfold, slight aging and browning; otherwise about near fine with a strong impression. Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) was considered the father of German mapmaking, and in 1715 was actually appointed the Geographer to the Emperor. He founded his mapmaking business in 1702, and he would produce several major atlases between 1707 and 1716. This is a detailed and attractive map of part of the southwestern part of Germany that includes Wuerttemberg. While the map is one sheet of a two-sheet map, it has a complete appearance, and an elaborate title cartouche. Our inventory includes both sheets but as seperate maps. Van De Gohm: Antique Maps. Seutter, Mathaus. Engraved double page map, 24" x 20 1/2", hand colored, and large title cartouche. Some foxing, occasional small staining, normal aging and browning, signature on verso; otherwise verso good with a strong impression. Seutter (1678-1757) was born in Augsburg, and served as an apprentice with Homann before establishing his own firm in Augsburg in 1710. He was considered one of the most important German cartographers, but it seems that much of his work were copies of Homann maps. He published several atlases, and globes, but his most famous work was his "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" published in 1725. This map of the town of Halberstadt Germany, which is in the Saxony-Anhalt region. Ortelius, Abraham Hand colored, double-page engraved map, 325 x 425 mm (14" x 18"), Latin text on verso. Wide margins, minor soiling in margins, slight aging; otherwise bright and clean with strong impression. Ortelius (1527-1598) is typically viewed as the creator of the modern atlas. He started his career as a map-engraver around 1547, and by 1570 he published the first edition of his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Atlas of the Whole World), which included seventy maps, many engraved by Frans Hogenberg. This map is colorful impression of Abruzzi, Italy, and it was probably published in 1612.- $500

Stieler, Adolph Map, folio, slight coloring, 18" x 15". Normal aging, very light scattered foxing; overall very good plus. Attractive map of the African continent, including the islands in the South Atlantic and the coastline of Brazil. At the bottom of the map on the left is a detailed inset of Algeria, on the right is a color key for the map, indicating colonial ownership, and ancomparative engraving of mountain heights. Blaeu, Willem. Single page map, large single folio (11" x 19 1/2"), and some coloring, small cartouche in upper left corner. Unclear when coloring was done, map ends at neat line on what should be the right margin (no real right margin for the map, one edge a little rough, but not significant, normal aging and browning, print on the reverse; overall about very good. Willem Blaeu (1571-1638) was the founder of one of the great cartographic publishing dynasties, which produced some of the best maps of the period. Included in his body of work was a wonderful series of county maps. This map is a county map of Zutphen in Gelderland, a province in the Netherlands. The map appears to illustrate the eastern part of the province and part of Germany. Van De Gohm p. 104-106.- $125

Jansson, Jan Copper engraved double page map, uncolored, small cartouche in lower left corner, 23 1/2" x 18 1/2", wide margins. Old tape repair to centerfold on reverse side, some chips and tears in margins with some archival tape repairs, some soiling and staining in margins. impression generally clean and crisp. Jansson (1588-1664) was a Dutch mapmaker during the "golden age" of Dutch cartography. He started out as a publisher and bookseller, but when he married the daughter of another mapmaker, Jodocus Hondius, he got into that business. In 1633 he and his brother-in=law (Henry Hodicus) produced the two volume edition of the Mercator Atlas. The present map shows Hungarian considerable detail, and has a small cartouche featuring a man and woman next two a coat of arms. Portinaro and Knirsch p.315. Van De Gohm p.112-113.- $300

Map has a couple of small holes, and a repaired tear on the top part of map, also some minor margin tears, slight aging and browning; otherwise very good with a strong impression. He founded his mapmaking business in 1702, and he would produce several major atlases between 1707 and 1716. Some browning and darkening, normal aging, small chp on bottom, not affecting text or image, a couple of small nicks on top; otherwise in about very good condition. This small poster features image of Louis knocking Carnera down. Louis would drop Carnera three times in the fight and give him a pretty terrible beating in the process.- $35

Some browning and darkening; folded, small corner piece missing, loss of a couple of letters, a couple of minor archival tape repairs, otherwise almost good condition. This poster features a couple of photos of Louis, an advertisment for the film the Battling Buckeroo, and another ad for the Cotton Club. The poster mentions some of his fights covered in the film, including Braddock, Baer, Carnera, Schmeling, Sharkey, and Levinsky.- $65
