79p., photos, wrps. Even when the Skyhawk began its operational career in the early seventies, the Argentine Navy had been considering its incorporation for several years before. This undoubtedly dates back to October 1955, with the design of the future embarked air group. The planning of the Naval Aviation Command, taking into consideration different factors, provides for the activation of two to three embarked combat squadrons. In each case it was deemed necessary to have at least one squadron for day and night attack missions with Douglas AD-5 Skyraider aircraft, which was also suitable for torpedo, reconnaissance and exploration tasks. The efforts to purchase at least twelve Skyraiders did not find an echo with the US Navy, which only in 1959 could consider the sale of the AD-3C Skyraider.

Once it was completed, the need for the Argentine Air Force to replace all of its outdated combat aircraft, essentially single-engine propellers with fixed landing gear, such as the Curtiss 75 and Northrop 8A-2, became evident. The country's solid economic position favored the purchase of modern aircraft, although options were scarce. Great Britain undoubtedly stood out with the De Havilland Vampire and the Gloster Meteor. The first meetings held between parties, at the end of 1945, took place within the greatest reserve. The thing is that the talks revolved around nothing less than the transfer of the most advanced aerial weapons system of the time and that would give rise to friction between the two main allied powers, over the convenience of allowing this operation. Throughout 1967 the Naval Aviation Command dedicated itself to studying the replacement of its only combat jets, the Grumman F9F Panther, which had to be carried out in the shortest possible time. The new aircraft had to be capable of operating from the ARA (V-1) "Independence" aircraft carrier in order to maintain the embarked attack capacity - diminished since the retirement of the Vought F4U Corsair. As a conditioning factor, it had to be a two-seater suitable for training. So relevant was this capability that, after a transition period that would extend from 1969 to 1972, the selected model had to go to the Naval Aviation School, as a primary and basic jet trainer.
