William Hamilton (1730-1803) was british ambassador for over twenty year at the Kingdom of Naples.His interests in archeology and vulcanology let him to create one of the most important collection of greek vases that was subsequently sold to the British Museum.For the vulcanology he contacted with the landscape painter Petrus Fabris who was living in Naples and comissioned him to take designs from Vesubius, Etna, Stromboli and Lipari islands as volcanic areas in southern Italy.They climbed 22 times to the Vesubius in order to record different stages of the eruptions that he witnessed during his time at Naples. Petrus Fabris designed and later engraved and coloured the plates that Hamilton praised him as "executed with such delicacy and perfection, as scarcely to be distinguished from the original drawings themselves". The book Campi Phlegraei refers to the volcanic area of Pozzuoli nearby Naples that was also an important archeological area with discoveries during the XVIII century joint with Pompey and Herculaneum. Giovanni Baptista Falda 65x 53 cms.Fine illustrated plan of Rome in bird´s eye view where all the main buildings,palaces, churches, monasteries,piazzas, gardens are represented.Large cartouche on upper left corner with a figure with papal robes representing St Peter with the keys and allegorical figure of justice. Five columns of text with numbered key of all building represented on the map. Falda (1643-1678) was an italian architect and engraver that worked with Bernini at his studio and later became a draughtsman and engraver. He is famous for his wall map representing Rome in 12 sheets "Nuova Pianta et Alzata della citta di Roma" published in 1676 of which this plan is a reduced version. Falda´s views celebrated the works carried out by Pope Alexander VII that was a complete renovation for Rome in gardens, fountains and architectural elements along the city.- $2,791
