World Map

Large scale double hemisphere World map dedicated to the Marquis of Pescara ,Cesare D´Avalos. Fine example of this world map considered nowadays exceedingly rare .Paolo Petrini was a cartographer active at Naples during the late XVII and early XVIII century of whom not much printed work has remained. The hemispheres are set aloft amidst a fine allegorical composition. The source for the Americas is the map by Coronelli published in the Atlante Veneto circa 1690. The Great lakes are well delineated. The Mississippi river has some level of distortion as its mouth is located far southwest of its true location. California is represented as a large island and the Pacific Northwest the coast curves inwards to include the strait of Anian. The South American shows some level of distortion with a widened form. In regard to the rest of the world, the source seems to be the world map by Nicolas de Fer published in 1694. Asia is well charted based on Dutch and Jesuit sources. Australia is said to be discovered in 1644 on the map ( Abel Tasman voyages) and Petrini delineates the coasts of western and southern Australia and part of Tasmania. The east coast of Australia remains uncharted. The allegory sorrounding the map includes images of Saturn,Jupiter,Mars,Venus,Mercury with zodiacal signs and mithological figures.Below are depictions of Trade,Industry,Science and Art. Not much is know of Petrini. He published his rare atlas: "Atlante Partenopeo"(1700-1718) and set of continents and world maps in large size.Few copies are tracked in the market in the last 30 years.
