Rackham 1900”. The art by sight is 7″ x 7″, and is presented newly double matted, framed and glazed using all archival materials to a completed size of 16.25″ x 16.25″. A fantastic original published piece by Rackham, heavily detailed in his wonderful style. Signed by Rackham below his art. The art is in excellent condition with but very pale toning. Provenance: The art was acquired via Sotheby’s, London, and a copy of the invoice will accompany the artwork for provenance. Rackham’s pieces were known for their luxurious use of color and keen attention to detail. His styles ranged easily from vivid, bright splashes of color to more muted, subtle tones. He became a member of the Royal Watercolour Society and mastered the watercolor method of painting, seen in many of his works. Many of the books Rackham illustrated include both his black and white, and color plates. Much of Rackham’s work depicts gnomes, fairies, goblins or other creatures from mythology, folklore or fable. Whether illustrating whimsical books for children or darker matter for adults, Rackham’s imaginative, brilliant illustration style was highly sought after and enhanced any text it accompanied. Rackham died in 1939, and now, more than 70 years after his death, his work is highly collectible with small watercolors selling in the $40,000 range!! First Edition, Third Impression, 1942 A very clean copy with unrestored bright clean boards. The first printing of The Hobbit was issued on 21st September 1937 with a print run of only 1500 copies. The book was an immediate success and sold out within months. The second impression was printed in December the same year in an edition of 2300 copies (423 of which were destroyed at the warehouse of the binder Key and Whiting in the bombing of London on November 7th 1940) and was the first printing to include the author’s one color plate, initially commissioned for and later published in the American edition. [Hammond A3a. ] In late 1942, Allen & Unwin printed 1,500 copies of a third impression. Arguably more scarce than a 1st/1st, with few having survived due to a warehouse fire during the war, and the fact that they were printed on the standard cheap wartime paper. To this end we have only spotted two other third printings, one with an original jacket, listed for $56,000.00; and one other inferior 3rd printing copy without the jacket listed for $12,500. Today first/firsts are selling for $140,000 and up in an original jacket. This unrestored book is in near fine/very good plus condition for the Third Impression. The boards are clean and bright with strong vibrant unfaded deep blue details. Slight toning and rubbing to the cloth with a few area with very small discolorations. The book is in excellent condition for this title being firmly bound, having benefited from being rebacked with all the original cloth laid back down. As such the book is tight and sound and quite readable without the usual cracked hinges or broken bindings. H.G. WELLS First US Edition, First Printing, First State An exceedingly scarce title to locate in the first US printing. A handsome, unrestored, clean example of this title. The US edition is the true first printing having been published one month prior to the UK edition. All pages present, and firmly bound. First state with “Bowen/Merrill” at the base of the spine panel. Variant with the moon, author and title all gold stamped to the front, and the title blind stamped to the rear board. The American edition of The First Men in the Moon is the true first edition in book form, preceding the London edition by one month. Wells’s lunar adventure was a genre-defining work, and arguably the first alien dystopia, which inspired many later works. The First State book is in near fine condition with beautiful blue cloth boards with strong unfaded gilt tiles to the front and spine. Variant with both the moon, the author and the tiles all stamped in gold, and stunning gilt designs to the front with gilt titles to the spine, and the title blind stamped to the rear board.
