Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel
First printing with a matching date of 1939 on the title page. There is some overall light soiling to the cloth. The last few leaves have some waviness along the lower edge. A 1 1/8" tear to the lower edge of one leaf. A few spots of minor soiling to the text. To the front pastedown is "Number 32" written to the upper corner, near the fore edge. This is hidden by the jacket flap. The dust jacket is well chipped along all edges, spine ends and corners. There are also several rough tears. The longest of these is to the lower, front, near the fore edge. There is clear tape repairing this tear as well as another piece, repairing a tear to the lower, center of the front panel. According to the Bienvenue and Schmidt Bibliography, this is Binding A. Folio. 15" x 11". The front cover is printed on a background of gray-green. The back cover is blank. The spine is in green cloth. The front and rear hinges are reinforced with a white strip of tape, as originally published. Every page is illustrated in color by Ike Morgan. There is wear to the spine ends. The covers are worn with some soiling and crackling. Each cover has a piece missing to the lower fore corner. The front cover has several tears, all of which are repaired to the verso with clear tape. The inside, rear cover has large areas of darkening, likely from old pieces of paper laid in loose. A former owner inscription in pencil to the inside, front cover that is dated 1908. Very tight with no loose pages. There are a few pages with some light soiling. The last leaf present, p. 717-718, is loose and also shows much chipping, creasing and a longer tear. To the first and last 15-20 leaves there is creasing to the upper and lower corners. Archive of Letters
Updike, Daniel Berkeley A Small Archive of letters dated 1901-1902. All are addressed to William Patton of Doubleday, Page & Co. All are on Updike's personal letterhead with D. B. Updike, The Merrymount Press printed at the top. The archive consists of 14 TLS's, 1 ALS, 3 LS's (secretarially signed) , 1 Ls, 1 TLs, and two typed, incomplete letters, missing the final page. Two letters consist of 2 pages each. One TLS has a holograph PS of several lines in Updike's hand. Most of the letters include details for printing, paper choices, type uses, page design, layout, etc. It appears at this time Updike was working on The Variorum and Definitive Edition of The Poetical and Prose Writings of Edward Fitzgerald, published in 1903.
