La Caricatura [semanario humorístico ilustrado por nuestros primeros dibujantes]
S.D., Madrid: 1887
- $4,790
107vols. Folio. S.P. The Magazine that Initiated the Spanish Cartoon, a Complete Run. Folio; issues 1-107. ALL PUBLISHED. A MOST RELEVANT AND FINELY ILLUSTRATED SATIRICAL PERIODICAL. Each number has eight pages; the two central ones are occupied by a cartoon by Mecachis, considered the first creator of this graphic genre and one of the masters of caricature. With many illustrations (caricatures, jokes, comic strips and comic strips, with text captions in prose and in verse), in an "incisive, casual and popular style", which generally avoided politics, being social in nature and customs. The illustrator, Eduardo Sáenz-Hermúa (Madrid, 1859-Madrid, 1898), known by his pseudonym "Mecachis", was a Spanish cartoonist, graphic humorist and writer. He was one of the most versatile illustrators in early Spanish comic strips. A medical student, his first drawings were published in the satirical magazine La Broma. Along with the cartoonists Demócrito and Ramón Cilla, Mecachis was one of the main artists of this democratic and republican magazine. In the double pages of this magazine, Mecachis formed and defined his own style with his political cartoons. The publication of La Broma was canceled in August 1885, but Mecachis had already launched his own project with this magazine La Caricatura a year earlier. From the first publication, he was the inspiration, the main artist and the director of this new magazine. Because of his work for La Caricatura he is often credited as the authentic creator of the Spanish cartoon. WorldCat: no copies in US Libraries.

La Risa: periódico ilustrado cómico y humorístico
Director literario: Carlos Frontaura. Director Artistico: Alfredo Perea 53vols. 8vo. S.P. 19th Century Illustrated Satirical/Social/Political Periodical from Spain. Opposed to the Government. Issues 1-53. ALL PUBLISHED. Fully illustrated. Contemporary leather. FIRST EDITION of this weekly publication that makes a scathing critique of social and political events of the time. It appeared every Sunday and lasted exactly one year, publishing its first issue on January 1, and the 53 and last, on December 30, 1888, in installments of 16 pages, composed of two columns and with some covers occupied entirely by a comic illustration or a joke. With the Bourbon Restoration (1874-1931), a period of political stability and relative freedom of expression was experienced in Spain. Relative because, although a law on freedom of the press was signed, any attack on the monarchy, religion, the form of government and the fundamental institutions of the State was considered a crime; thanks to the ingenuity of the editors and despite the fines, kidnapping of editions and even prison sentences, a large plurality of newspapers and magazines of various tendencies were published, among them satirical publications opposed to the current regime, as the one offered here. Escelentisimo Señor. Entre las Satisfacciones Que Han Inundado Mi Alma al Volver a Respirar el Aire de la Patria, por las Demonstraciones de Todas Clases.
[Santa Anna, Antonio Lopez de] Folio. S.P. .continúa del título.Que Han Querido Hacer Mis Compatriotas a Mi Persona. [captino title and first lines of text]. Important Open Letter from Santa Anna Shortly After his Return from Exile. Broadsheet, approximately 12.5 x 9 inches. In a gilt lettered, quarter calf and cloth folder. A rare address circulated by Santa Anna shortly after he returned from exile to lead the Mexican military response in the war against the United States. This open letter was written on August 20, 1846, from his personal estate in Xalapa, Veracruz, to his ally General Jose Mariano de Salas. It principally discusses the social, political, and economic problems facing Mexico in the forthcoming struggle and suggests that Santa Anna himself is the best candidate to solve them. He is at pains to state that he has only ever acted (in his view) in the best interests of the nation, and that internecine factionalism amongst political parties has made the country weak. Santa Anna continues that he would be happy to return as the leader of Mexico, but only if called upon by the people and legitimate authorities. An important address from the perennial leader of Mexico on his ambitions for another return to power, this time to face the invading Americans at the outset of the Mexican-American War. La Vida, que Hizo el Siervo de Dios Gregorio Lopez, en algunos Lugares de esta Nueva Espana
Losa, Francisco 8vo. 1+8+107+1 pp. Life of a Renowned Missionary in New Spain, who Lived Amongst the Chichimecos Indians. Only One Copy in the US (Minnesota). In 8vo (135 mm x 90 mm). 1 [blank], 8 ff. 107, 1 ff., missing two leaves at the beginning, text complete. Old vellum. Second edition, published two years after the first, printed in 1613 in Mexico. This is the first obtainable edition, the first being virtually impossible to find. Lopez (1542 - 1596) was a Spanish missionary and something of a mystery; he traveled to Mexico in 1562, making port at Veracruz at the age of twenty. Shortly after arriving, he left for Mexico City, where he worked for a while before completing his plans to travel to the Zacatecas region and live amongst the Chichimecos Indians. He became a hermit and spent his life amongst Mexican natives in different regions, under suspicion of heresy, apparently not attending Masses and religious services. Overall, Lopez' experiences become one of the earliest accounts of missionary work in New Spain. Little is known, and much is speculated regarding his early life in Spain, some saying he was a member of the nobility, "one of the most successful of the many early missionaries among the Indians, of New Spain, was born at Madrid, July 4th 1542, and is said to have been an illegitimate son of Charles V. or Philip II. At the age of twenty he landed at Vera Cruz, and soon after pitched his tent alone among the Chichimecos Indians. He died on the 20th of July, 1596, at Santa Fé, six miles from Mexico city, where he had been visited in his hermitage by all distinguished visitors to Mexico." (Maggs, 1922, 139). Losa's account of Lopez' life aroused considerable interest, with the work being reprinted several times in the 17th and 18th century centuries; all editions are scarce, this one particularly so.Palau deeming it as "very rare". Medina, BHA 624; Palau, 142524 ("muy rara"); Sabin, 42575 (first edition), not mentioning this edition. WorldCat: One copy in US Libraries (Minnesota).- $5,790
