First edition signed by author. Very good in very good dust wrapper. Inscribed on front free end-paper " To Charles & Katharine from Frances". Presentation from one grandchild of Charles Darwin to another. Frances Cornford (nee Darwin) was the daughter of Francis, Charles' third son while Charles Galton Darwin who married Katharine Pember was the son of Sir George Howard Darwin, second son of Charles.

Gaskell was a doctor who worked among the labouring population and here describes the appalling living conditions of many mill workers. He published an expanded and revised version entitled Artisans and Machinery in 1836. Both titles are rare.- $176

However although the portrait frontispiece of King Charles is common to various editions, we have not been able to locate any other copies with the second frontispiece before the second part. It is a double portrait of Thomas Earl of Strafford & William Arch. B. of Canterbury. Contemporary calf, rebacked with original spine laid down, and new end-papers.- $605

Coles, William 12mo (140 x 79 mm): (24), 175, (1 blank)pp. First edition, first issue without the cancels of the second issue. The four leaf dedication-errata gathering (a4) is on paper with vertical chain lines. Small marginal worm hole affecting 14 leaves in the bottom corner. The main text block is unaffected but a few of the catch words are slightly damaged. Later full calf, spine rebacked. Coles classified plants according to the Galenic system related to parts of the body. This first issue contains a savage attack on astrology which was removed from the second issue when Coles realised that Elias Ashmole to whom he had dedicated the book was himself an astrologer.
