4to, single sheet of translucent glassine folded once to make four pages. Single issue of the remarkable periodical issued from the influential gallery run by Adriaan van Ravesteijn and Geert van Beijeren. Over the course of almost 20 years the gallery issued 156 of these bulletins, in almost all cases a single sheet folded into four panels, given over to the work of a single artist project, each a standalone work. One of the landmark periodicals of conceptual art. This installment is one of the most formally striking, being printed on glassine in such a way that the entire text can only be read closed. The Hobo News and The Bowery News, The Voice of Society’s Basement. [Collection of 23 Issues]
Mulkern, Pat "The Roaming Dreamer" et al, eds Tabloid format, offset printed on newsprint. Twenty-one issues of the Hobo News, including Vol. 5, No. 32, and Vol. 6, Nos. 13-20, 22-24, 31-33, 35-37, and 40-42, with numbers 68 and 72 of the Bowery News. A Little Fun to Match the Sorrow. A significant collection of the legendary hobo newspaper of the Bowery, which documented the life of itinerant, down and out Bohemia of New York City, and was the subject of an infamous court case concerning the free press which was documented in Life Magazine. "To the vast surprise of a Manhattan police court last week, a mussy little prisoner informed the judge that the issue at stake in his case was not whether he had been caught peddling in Times Square without a license, but whether or not the U.S. people were the enjoy the rights and privileges of a free press. the journal which was thus defended is like no other paper on earth. It is a peach and saffron tabloid full of hand-me-down line drawings and photographs of celebrated sundowners, sentimental verse, advertisements of rabbits' feet and 'surprise novelties.' . It is distributed in Manhattan by its editors, elsewhere by itinerants at 5 cents a copy - 10 cents 'if we can get it.' . Next to the editors of the New Yorker, publisher and staff of the Hobo News are probably the most picturesque group of journalists in the US. Editorial offices - and living quarters for some contributores - are in a cluttered cellar on Manhattan's noisy 17th street. Here publisher Mulkern is surrounded by an editorial board which includes 'Crown Prince Bozo,' Dean o'Brien and Otis O. (The Boomer Poet) Rodgers. Press, linotype and paper, bought on credit by the Roaming Dreamer in 1935, are paid for out of profits on the installment plan." Paper toned, as usual, with some issues split at the spine and the occasional stain. Aside from these faults, the issues remain supple and complete, and in much better condition than normally found. As one might suspect, the paper used was incredibly cheap and fragile, and these are the nicest copies we've seen for a spell.- $2,200

Vostell, Wolf, ed. [La Monte Young, George Maciunas, Nam June Paik, Arthur Köpcke, Nam June Paik 4to, seven folding leaves, each bound in full french card wraps with an additional leaf tipped onto cover. Each folding leaf is devoted to the work of a single artist. This issue includes work by Arthur Köpcke, George Maciunas, Benjamin Patterson, Nam June Paik, and La Monte Young. Benjamin Patterson's contribution is perforated as issued. Wraps a bit creased and rubbed with some spots of foxing, some crumpling and small chips to the leaf tipped onto cover, and a small stain at back cover. AL (Liber Legis). The Book of the Law. Sub figura xxxi. As Delivered by 93-AIWASS – 418 to ankh-f-n-khonsu The Priest of the Princes Who is 666. The Equinox of the Gods Vol. III No. III
Crowley, Aleister 4to, v, 137 + [1] pp, + [65] facsimile manuscript sheets laid in at rear, with errata slip tipped in facing p. [138] listing 17 items. With cancel slip to title page changing the date to 1937, with the High Holborn address. Fore edges of text untrimmed. All sheets laid into the card folder which was printed to hold the facsimile sheets. Though not marked as such, from the library of Gerrit Lansing. An unusual state, which matches most points of the Subscriber's edition, which had been limited to 250 copies. However, this copy is not bound in orange paper boards, as usually found, but instead consists of loose sheets laid into a folder which bears the same printed cover as that used to hold the smaller facsimile sheets. The Comment is printed inside the back of the folder. The folder is darkened and chipped at extremities, and cracked and nearly separated at the spine for about half of its height, with a large chip missing from the upper margin of back panel, and with several closed tears. The interior sheets are lightly toned, heavier to the facsimile sheets, which show some fraying and chipping to the margins of several of the sheets. A well-used example.- $2,200
