47 of 50 maps (lacks 1-3). Bound in original quarter vellum and boards. Worn. An interesting and rare collection of maps of England and Wales. Contemporary hand-written numbers for square acres and miles in circuit for each county added to list of maps.There a number of contemporary hand-written notes tipped in, including addresses of country estates. and signatures. Of particular significance is a map pasted opposite the Suffolk map, and a contemporary hand-written description titled 'Lord Pagets's Instructions for establishing advanced posts'. The description and map show where military posts were established in the area bounded by Ipswich, Woodbridge and the rivers Orwel and Deben. This was at the time of the Napoleonic wars in the early 1800s. Opposite the Surrey map is a marriage notice in contemporary hand tipped in, and a lose sheet with a hand-coloured diagram of a military plan showing regimental positions such as the Dorset Volunteers under Col. Digby, etc., with a short diary on the reverse.The Sisters Dowdeswell, 1832
Water colour portrait of two sisters of the Dowdeswell Family. A Dowdeswell sister, Sarah Wall (nee Dowdeswell) and her husband Anthony Wall and their young family emigrated to New Zealand in 1841, settling in Porirua. This fine portrait of two Dowdeswell sisters is possibly that of two of Sarah's sisters to whom she wrote after her arrival in New Zealand and could be a memento brought out to New Zealand. The watercolour is on a card 17.5 x 22 cm, with foxing but not affecting the image.Collection of Hand-written letters

Alfred Austin Signed thank-you card from Alfred Austin, addressed from Swinford Manor, Ashford, Kent, dated Jan. 1896, signed in ink. Inside is a poem from the minor poet and wine dealer John Fountain Tattersall, celebrating the appointment of Austin as Poet Laureate in that year. Brougham, Lord Signature of Lord Brougham, on slip: ‘London March . 1831, The Lady Arabella Acheson. Worlingham Hall, Beccles, Suffolk. H Brougham’. Includes a postmark dated 31 March 1831. Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux (1778-1868) was the liberal and reformist politician who became Lord Chancellor in 1830, playing a significant role in passing the Reform Act, and in the abolition of slavery. Lady Arabella Acheson was a member of the Acheson family, of the Earls of Gosford, occupying Worlingham Hall in Suffolk. 11.5 x 7 cm.- $26

Celebrating Peace Day, Rotorua
Soper, George Original watercolour painted by George Soper which was reproduced as a lithograph in The Graphic, July 19, 1902. The picture shows Maori women dancing around a bonfire, watched by a large group in a general celebration of the ending of the Boer War. Soper (1870-1942) was an English artist and illustrator, whose work appeared in numerous magazine and papers. This is the original painting of a well-known, and widely reproduced image, thus very special.- $2,348
