THE PIAZZA TALES
["Ah, Bartleby! Ah, humanity!"] New York: Dix & Edwards, 1856. 7 pp undated ads. Original blind-stamped brown cloth. First Edition of Melville's only collection of short stories. Included are the well-known "Benito Cereno" and "Bartleby [the Scrivener]", as well as "The Lightning-Rod Man, "The Encantadas" and two others. "Bartleby" has long been a favorite, with its mysterious Wall Street copyist who invariably responds "I would prefer not to" to almost any suggestion or request. It has been said that the tale reflects Melville's sense of futility at the time, due to the public's neglect of his novels (his own "dead letters"). This copy is in brown vertically-ribbed cloth ("T"), one of eight cloth styles/colors cited by Blanck for this title (no priority); the endpapers are dull yellow (one of four colors, of no known precedence). In this copy the signature mark 14* does appear (precedence unknown, per Blanck). Condition is very good (spine gilt a bit dull as usual, minor wear at the head of the spine and top of rear board); the front endpaper is cracked, and that paste-down has a small shadow from a former booklabel. In our experience, THE PIAZZA TALES seldom seems to turn up in much better condition. Blanck 13669.PM December-January 1939/40. Vol 1 No 2. [COVER BY HERBERT BAYER]

Handbooks Prepared under the Direction of the Historical Section of the Foreign Office – No. 71.
First edition thus, first impression, combining the text of briefing handbooks on two crucial Chinese treaty ports which were issued to British delegates to the Paris Peace Conference. During the Versailles negotiations, the fate of Kiaochow (Jiaozhou) caused considerable conflict among the Allies and sparked the May Fourth protests in China. In spring 1917, the Foreign Office established a dedicated historical section under the direction of Prothero (1848-1922), a former president of the Royal Historical Society. Its intention was to compile handbooks for British delegates attending post-war peace negotiations. Some 160 studies were eventually prepared for internal circulation in blue wrappers. One year later, "in response to numerous enquiries and requests", the Foreign Office decided to release the guides to the public in green wrappers under the HMSO imprint, with the text of each substantially unaltered. Octavo. Original green card wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in black. Wrappers sunned, rusting at staples, contents clean with light toning. A very good copy.Witte Krant. De papieren Tijger
