Domestically, Bush's tenure witnessed economic fluctuations, including a recession, for which he faced criticism. His approach to domestic policy was marked by a mix of pragmatic compromise and ideological steadfastness, exemplified by his decision to compromise with Congress on budgetary matters despite his earlier pledge against tax increases. Additionally, his administration navigated complex issues such as environmental policy, signing into law the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. Despite his accomplishments in foreign affairs, Bush's presidency is often overshadowed by his defeat in the 1992 election, attributed in part to economic concerns and a perceived disconnection from the concerns of everyday Americans. Nonetheless, his diplomatic efforts and leadership during pivotal moments in international relations underscore his significance in shaping the post-Cold War era.

McCartney and Lennon became each other’s closest confidants and songwriting collaborators, complementing each other’s talents. Lennon often provided a raw, introspective edge to their songs, while McCartney contributed catchy melodies and a more optimistic tone. As The Beatles ascended to fame in the early 1960s, McCartney and Lennon assumed principal roles as the band's primary songwriters, their collaboration reaching a zenith during the peak of Beatlemania. Their mutual encouragement and competitive spirit catalyzed innovation, yielding a repertoire replete with enduring classics within the rock 'n' roll lexicon. Following The Beatles’ breakup in 1970, tensions arose between McCartney and Lennon. However, their friendship persisted through indirect channels and legal intermediaries, with bitterness largely fading by the mid-1970s.

View of the Birthplace of George Washington.

Rare nineteenth century oil painting after John Gadsby Chapman (New York/Italy, 1808-1889) depicting the birthplace of President George Washington in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Oil on canvas, the painting depicts the inlet of the Potomac River which divides the site of the Washington family home at Pope's Creek Plantation in the foreground from the Maryland shore and farmyard visible in the distance. A stone marker in the extreme foreground reads: "Here on the 22 February AD 1732 Geo Washington was Born." Likely an early copy of the engraving after John Gadsby Chapman's painting of the same scene, now in the collection of Mount Vernon. "Chapman painted nine landscapes illustrating locations significant to the life of George Washington. The series begins with the site of Washington's birth at the Pope's Creek Plantation in Westmoreland County, continues through the site of the Battle of Yorktown, and concludes with scenes of Mount Vernon including the bedchamber in which Washington died and the new tomb in which he was interred in 1831. Chapman exhibited seven of these paintings at the National Academy of Design in New York City during the summer of 1835. Later, nine of the paintings were acquired by James Kirke Paulding (1778-1860), the New York author and onetime Secretary of the Navy, who illustrated two of the works in his 1835 biography of George Washington." (Donald W. Reynolds Museum, George Washington's Mount Vernon). In near fine condition. Housed in a giltwood frame with nameplate. The painting measures 17.5 inches by 23.5 inches. His father was a justice of the peace and a prominent public figure who had four additional children from his first marriage to Jane Butler. The family moved to Little Hunting Creek in 1734 before eventually settling in Ferry Farm near Fredericksburg, Virginia. When Augustine died in 1743, Washington inherited Ferry Farm and ten slaves; his older half-brother Lawrence inherited Little Hunting Creek and renamed it Mount Vernon.

Perelandra.

Lewis, C.S First edition of the second novel in Lewis' classic trilogy. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with a portion of restoration to foot of spine, portion of restoration to head, affecting title, two small central points of restoration to spine, corners neatly restored, corner clipped with the original price of 8s. 6d showing. Uncommon in the original dust jacket. "Written during the dark hours immediately before and during the Second World War, C. S. Lewis's Space Trilogy, of which Perelandra is the second volume, stands alongside such works as Albert Camus's The Plague and George Orwell's 1984 as a timely parable that has become timeless, beloved by succeeding generations as much for the sheer wonder of its storytelling as for the significance of the moral concerns. For the trilogy's central figure, C. S. Lewis created perhaps the most memorable character of his career, the brilliant, clear-eyed, and fiercely brave philologist Dr. Elwin Ransom. Appropriately, Lewis modeled Dr. Ransom after his dear friend J. R. R. Tolkien, for in the scope of its imaginative achievement and the totality of its vision of not one but two imaginary worlds, the Space Trilogy is rivaled in this century only by Tolkien's trilogy The Lord of the Rings. Readers who fall in love with Lewis's fantasy series The Chronicles of Namia as children unfailingly cherish his Space Trilogy as adults; it, too, brings to life strange and magical realms in which epic battles are fought between the forces of light and those of darkness. But in the many layers of its allegory, and the sophistication and piercing brilliance of its insights into the human condition, it occupies a place among the English language's most extraordinary works for any age, and for all time.
