The decade with which it deals has been a golden one and as such it is a challenge to the future. Are we going to live on the formula of these ten years and suffer the same steep decline as in the post-Romantic era, or are we going to use this inspiration as a springboard? We have in this country, for the first time, established the machinery for a national ballet that will endure. We may be justly proud but we must never be complacent; there can be even greater risks in perfect machinery than in hasty improvisation. The personality of the decade has been Dame Ninette de Valois. Her artistry, integrity and great personal prestige have meant that the transfer of power from the individual to the machine has not yet occurred in fact and we are still living under the best possible régime, that of the creative individual in charge of the machine. The test will come when that is no longer the case and we are working as in Paris, Copenhagen and Moscow.

THE LIVES OF OUR HEROES OF THE CRIMEA

FORE-EDGE PAINTING THE LIVES OF OUR HEROES OF THE CRIMEA Ryan, George Published by James Field and Co, London, 1855 The Charge of the Light Brigade Bound in full red hard grain Morocco extra gilt 408pp frontice piece very good condition Book plate on front paste down of William Waldergrave, another prominent family in the history of England. George Ryan, a writer otherwise highly critical of Lord Cardigan, estimated that he spent about £10,000 (equivalent to £1,000,000 in 2021) a year towards remounts and distinctive uniform for his troops.[36] In purchasing brilliant new uniforms for his men, Cardigan caused resentment among his professional officers; they had to match the men's attire with even more costly uniforms (a Hussar officer's jacket, for example, cost £40 equivalent to £3,900 in 2021) and officers had to buy their own. He wished his officers to be as aristocratic, flamboyant and stylish as he was himself and as a consequence, he had no time for those men "Indian officers" who had learnt their profession over many years of service with the 11th during its long posting to India. This attitude was particularly in evidence in the mess: Cardigan had forbidden the serving of porter, a popular beverage among the professional officers, and when at a formal mess dinner, a visitor had requested Moselle wine, which was served in a "black bottle" similar to that of porter, he decided that the "Indian" Captain John Reynolds, who had ordered it for the guest, was defying him. Reynolds was arrested and in due course received a strongly worded reprimand from Lord Hill, who although privately believing that his misgivings about Cardigan had been well founded, felt that, in the interests of good order and discipline, a public demonstration of support was necessary. FORE EDGE PAINTING - The Charge of the Light Brigade This Fore-Edge painting is an inviting scene from the charge showing the soldiers, horses and cannons amidst the battle field. Lord Cardigans most notorious exploit took place during the Crimean War on 25 October 1854 when, as a Major-General, in command of the Light Cavalry Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava, he led the Charge of the Light Brigade reaching the Russian guns before returning unscathed, in a manoeuvre that cost the lives of about 107 out of the 674 men under his command who took part in the charge (although others may have died of wounds later on). The extent to which Lord Cardigan was to blame is unproven since he attacked only after expressing his doubts and receiving a direct order in front of the troops from his immediate superior Lord Lucan, commander of the Cavalry Division. The two men were barely on speaking terms as Lucan was married to one of Cardigan's sisters and, as Cardigan believed, did not treat her well. The order had been conveyed by Captain Louis Nolan, who died in the charge, and both Lucan and Cardigan blamed him for passing on the order incorrectly. Cardigan's first action on his return from the charge was to report the undisciplined behavior of Captain Nolan (whom he did not now to be dead) in riding ahead of him at the start of the attack.

VOCABULARY OF THE UTAH AND SHO-SHO-NE OR SNAKE DIALECTS, WITH INDIAN LEGENDS AND TRADITIONS. INCLUDING A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE LIFE AND DEATH OF WAH-KER, THE INDIAN LAND PIRATE. . THIRD EDITION – REVISED AND ENLARGED.

Huntington, D.B. Salt Lake City, 1872. Salt Lake City, 1872. Pp. 32, stitched as issued, small bit of paper loss at blank inner margin of title professionally infilled, else near fine in half polished calf and marbled board clamshell case. Signature of W.D. Whitney Aug ’72 at top of title and stamp of John W. Young, Prop. Salt Lake City Museum Aug 24 1872. -- William Dwight Whitney was a famed American linguist at Yale, and John W. Young was son and Counselor of Brigham Young. An LDS copy has the same Young stamp but dated August 10, 1872. Extremely rare. Only recently has a copy of the first edition (1853) of Dimick Baker Huntington’s work been discovered in the LDS archives, while only two copies are known of the second (1854). This rare third contains a larger vocabulary, as well as the brief contemporary account of Wah-ker, a Shoshone who was baptized into the Church in 1850. Huntington, a prominent Mormon interpreter who spent a great deal of time with Wakara or Wah-ker, reports that, prior to the coming of the Mormons, the Ute had a vision of “the Lord sitting upon a throne dressed in white” and “that there would come to him a race of white people that would be his friends, and he must treat them kindly.” Huntington, and likely Wah-ker himself, believed the Mormons fulfilled this vision. Wakara’s War in 1853-4 became a defining event in the history of Mormon-Indian relations in Utah. Flake 4146. The primary focus of the publication is to document and present vocabulary from the Utah and Shoshone (Snake) dialects. These are languages spoken by Native American tribes in the western United States. The work serves as a linguistic resource for those interested in studying and understanding the languages spoken by the Utah and Shoshone peoples during the 19th century. In addition to the linguistic content, the publication includes Indian legends and traditions and provides cultural and historical context, offering insights into the traditions, stories, and way of life of these Native American groups. The work is authored by D.B. Huntington. While the details about Huntington's background and expertise in linguistics are not provided in the information you provided, individuals involved in linguistic studies during the 19th century often had various interests, including anthropology and ethnography. Wakara, also known as Wah-ker, was a prominent figure in the history of the American West during the mid-19th century. He was a Ute Indian chief and a leader of the Timpanogos Utes, a group that inhabited the region that is now Utah. Wakara was a respected and influential leader among the Ute people. His leadership became particularly significant during a time when interactions between Native American tribes and European settlers especially the Mormons, were becoming more complex. Wakara played a notable role during the Utah War (1857–1858), a conflict between the U.S. government and the Mormon settlers in the Utah Territory. The U.S. government, concerned about the influence of the Mormon Church in the territory, sent troops to establish federal authority. Wakara and the Utes initially sided with the Mormons but later withdrew from the conflict, he eventually withdrew his support and adopted a neutral stance in the conflict. It's important to note that historical perspectives on figures like Wakara may vary, and different sources may present different aspects of his life and actions. The study of such historical figures contributes to a broader understanding of the complex interactions and conflicts between Native American cultures and European-Ameri

VARIOUS SMALL FIRES AND MILK

VARIOUS SMALL FIRES AND MILK Ruscha, Edward. Los Angeles, 1964 Ruscha, Edward. VARIOUS SMALL FIRES AND MILK. Los Angeles, 1964. Pp. [48], 16 offset black and white photographs of, well, small fires and a glass of milk. First edition, one of 400 copies, this signed Ed Ruscha on title page. Original wraps and glassine cover, glassine a bit dust-soiled and chipped at top and bottom of backstrip, else fine. Ruscha’s second book of images in this style; this first edition is indeed much scarcer than his first such book, Twenty-Six Gasoline Stations (1962). The work is an artist's book, a form of art where the book itself is considered a work of art. It's not a traditional narrative but rather a conceptual piece. "Twenty-Six Gasoline Stations" is considered a seminal example of conceptual art. The idea behind the work is to present a seemingly mundane subject matter (gasoline stations) in a systematic and detached way, challenging traditional notions of artistic representation. The book has had a significant impact on the art world, particularly in the realm of conceptual and minimalist art. It influenced subsequent generations of artists and is often cited as an early example of the artist's book as a medium for artistic expression. Ruscha went on to create several other artist's books, each exploring ordinary subjects with a conceptual and detached approach. Some of his other well-known books include "Every Building on the Sunset Strip" (1966) and "Some Los Angeles Apartments" (1965). VARIOUS SMALL FIRES AND MILK. Los Angeles, (1964). Edward Ruscha's contributions to the art world, especially through his innovative use of language, photography, and the book format, have left a lasting legacy. His works are housed in major museums and collections around the world.

Leaves folded folded and stapled at gutter to form a pamphlet. Effectively predicts neutron stars and that, if massive enough, the stellar matter will contract indefinitely. The foundation paper explaining and predicting black holes and the subsequent discoveries and revolutions in astrophysics. Excessively rare, no copies recorded of this separate printing. The publication "On Massive Neutron Cores" by J. Robert Oppenheimer and George M. Volkoff, was published in the Physical Review, Volume 55, on February 15, 1939. The paper is a significant contribution to the field of astrophysics and nuclear physics, particularly in the study of neutron stars. Neutron stars are extremely dense celestial objects that are formed from the remnants of massive stars undergoing supernova explosions. This paper by Oppenheimer and Volkoff explores the theoretical aspects of neutron stars, considering the conditions under which a massive neutron core could exist. The work involves applying the principles of general relativity to understand the structure and properties of such dense cores. J. Robert Oppenheimer is a well-known physicist who later played a crucial role in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II as the scientific director of the Manhattan Project. George M. Volkoff, his collaborator in this paper, was a student of Oppenheimer s at Berkeley. This publication is part of the early scientific exploration of neutron stars and contributes to our understanding of the extreme conditions within these objects. It laid the groundwork for subsequent research in astrophysics and continues to be cited in discussions related to neutron stars and compact stellar remnants. Item ID#0586

SILVIA DUBOIS, (NOW 116 YERS OLD.): A BIOGRAFY OF THE SLAVE WHO WHIPT HER MISTRES AND GAND HER FREDOM.

SILVIA DUBOIS, (NOW 116 YERS OLD.): A BIOGRAFY OF THE SLAVE WHO WHIPT HER MISTRES AND GAND HER FREDOM. Larison, Cornelius Wilson. C. W. Larison publishing, Ringoes, NJ: C.W. Larison, 1883). Original narrow octavo, plain black cloth, pp. 124, 4 terminal leaves of publisher s ads. Frontispiece portrait of Dubois, two illustrated plates wrought in a manner reminiscent of Edward Gorey. Very good+ copy. A slave narrative whose authenticity remains in some doubt. Not in doubt, however, is the book s most peculiar orthography, which reaches for a form of abstruse phonetics, and which guarantees that merely reading the book will be a challenge. Larison developed the orthography in the fonic speler and sylabater: desind as an ad in acqwiring a noleg ov the fundamental principls ov the English langwag, also published in 1883 and termed orthoepy. Given that he was trying to transcribe dialect, and that there was a large movement to understand and preserve dialect in North America at the time, it is no surprise that Larison attempted to transcribe his interviews with Dubois in her dialect (think Uncle Remus, which was enjoying immense popularity at the time.). After 1883, Larison wrote and published several books in this improved language. HSP/LCP Collection #1252. Remarkably Rare. Cornelius Wilson Larison (1849 1929) was an American author and publisher. He was known for his work in preserving local history and producing historical publications, particularly related to Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and surrounding areas. He was born on July 31, 1849, in Larisons Corner, a hamlet in Delaware Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He attended Clinton Academy in Clinton, New Jersey. Larison worked as a teacher and later became a publisher and author, he gained recognition for his efforts in preserving local history through his writings. He authored and published several historical works, often focusing on the history of Hunterdon County and its communities. Ringoes Publishing Company: He operated a publishing company in Ringoes, New Jersey, known as the C.W. Larison Publishing Company. Larison was actively involved in local affairs and served as the secretary of the Hunterdon County Historical Society. One of his notable publications is "SILVIA DUBOIS, (NOW 116 YERS OLD.): A BIOGRAFY OF THE SLAVE WHO WHIPT HER MISTRES AND GAND HER FREDOM," published in 1883. This work likely reflects Larison's interest in preserving and sharing local histories. Cornelius Wilson Larison passed away on January 23, 1929, at the age of 79. While Larison may not be widely known on a national scale, his contributions to preserving and documenting local history, particularly through the C.W. Larison Publishing Company, have made a lasting impact on the historical understanding of Hunterdon County and the surrounding regions in New Jersey. Fore-Edge THE POETICAL WORKS OF MATTHEW PRIOR

THE POETICAL WORKS OF MATTHEW PRIOR With A Life by Rev. John Mitford, In Two Volumes, Published by Little, Brown, Boston, 1860 Early Reprint. 2 Vols Boston: Little, Brown, 1860. 12mo. Hard cover binding, viii, xlii, 280 pp. In 2 volumes, volume 1 only. Frontispiece engraved portrait with facsimile signature, protective tissue. Volume 2 vii, 343 pp. Exceptional good condition. Prior was probably born in Middlesex. He was the son of a Nonconformist joiner at Wimborne Minster, East Dorset. His father moved to London, and sent him to Westminster School, under Dr Richard Busby. On his father's death, he left school, and was cared for by his uncle, a vintner in Channel Row. Here, Lord Dorset found him reading Horace, and set him to translate an ode. He did so well that the Earl offered to contribute to the continuation of his education at Westminster. One of his schoolfellows and friends was Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax. It was to avoid being separated from Montagu and his brother James that Prior accepted, against his patron's wish, a scholarship recently founded at St John's College, Cambridge. He took his B.A. degree in 1686, and two years later became a fellow. In collaboration with Montagu, he wrote in 1687 the City Mouse and Country Mouse, in ridicule of John Dryden's The Hind and the Panther. FORE-EDGE PAINTINGS Vol i. Bridges Creek Westmoreland County VA Washington’s Birth Place. John Washington, George Washington's great-grandfather, settled this plantation in 1657 at the original property on Bridges Creek. The family acquired expanded land to the south toward nearby Popes Creek. Prior to 1718, the first section of the house was built. His father enlarged it between 1722–1726. He added on to it by the mid-1770s, making a ten-room house known as "Wakefield". This house, which George Washington in 1792 would describe as "the ancient mansion seat," was destroyed by fire and flood on Christmas Day 1779, and never rebuilt. George Washington was born in the house on February 22, 1732. Thirty-two graves of Washington family members have been found at the Bridges Creek cemetery plot, including George's half-brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Vol ii. Mount Vernon is an American landmark and former plantation of Founding Father, commander of the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War, and the first president of the United States George Washington and his wife, Martha. The estate is on the banks of the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia. It is located south of Washington, D.C., and Alexandria, Virginia, and is across the river from Prince George's County, Maryland. The Washington family acquired land in the area in 1674. Around 1734, the family embarked on an expansion of its estate that continued under George Washington, who began leasing the estate in 1754 before becoming its sole owner in 1761. The mansion was built of wood in a loose Palladian style; the original house was built by George Washington's father Augustine, around 1734. George Washington expanded the house twice, once in the late 1750s and again in the 1770s. It remained Washington's home for the rest of his life.

William Halifax was known for his revival of the fore-edge painting and Etruscan calf bindings, the latter, which, if not evolved by William, were successfully adopted by him. He also redeveloped the art of painting under transparent vellum. All three specialities seem to have been carried on both in the Edwards' home town of Halifax, where Thomas (1762-1834), another son, was in business until 1826 and in London, where James and John (1785-c 1791) opened a book store in 1784. It was published posthumously in 1866 by Ticknor and Fields, a Boston-based publishing firm. The collection includes a travel narrative, "A Yankee in Canada," as well as various essays on topics such as anti-slavery and social reform. The title essay, "A Yankee in Canada," documents Thoreau's journey to Canada in the 1850s. Thoreau was known for his love of nature and his philosophical reflections, and this work combines his observations of the Canadian landscape with his thoughts on the cultural and political differences between the United States and Canada. The collection also includes essays related to Thoreau's activism, particularly his anti-slavery stance. Thoreau was a strong advocate for civil disobedience and resistance to unjust laws, as famously expressed in his essay "Civil Disobedience." This collection likely includes some of his writings on these themes. Thoreau's works are often associated with transcendentalism, a philosophical and literary movement that emerged in the 19th century in the United States. Transcendentalists emphasized the inherent goodness of people and nature, as well as the importance of self-reliance and individual intuition. "A Yankee in Canada, With Anti-Slavery and Reform Papers" provides readers with insights into Thoreau's views on various social and political issues of his time, making it a valuable addition to his body of work. Thoreau's writings continue to be studied and appreciated for their intellectual depth, poetic prose, and exploration of themes that remain relevant today.

THE HELPMANN-BLISS BALLET MIRACLE IN THE GORBALS. A Study by Arnold L HASKELL,

Haskell, Arnold L. THE HELPMANN-BLISS BALLET MIRACLE IN THE GORBALS A Study by Arnold L HASKELL, HASKELL, Arnold L Published by The Albyn Press, Edinburgh, 1946 First Edition Blue cloth, 9 1/4" x 7". Illustrated with 15 black and white photographs by Edward Mandinian, John T. Knight, E. W. Copnall and others. Dust jacket un-clipped. Very good. 63 pages. Printed by Scottish County Press. The idea for the scenario for Miracle in the Gorbals came to Michael Benthall while he was working on a gun site in Glasgow. He worked on a detailed story and the characters, discussing the action with dancer and choreographer Robert Helpmann. The next collaborator to be identified was the designer, Edward Burra. The composer Arthur Bliss set to work on the score, with scenario and initial designs before him. The Royal Ballet performed the ballet every season from 1944 to 1950 and revived it in 1958, but it did not perform it in Glasgow itself when touring Scotland in 1945. They also performed the ballet in Paris. Bliss wrote the music in 1943 after his return from the United States. He created a concert suite from the ballet music, choosing seven of the fifteen numbers in the ballet, as well as the overture (The Street, The Girl Suicide, The Young Lovers, The Stranger, Dance of Deliverance, Intermezzo, Finale: The Killing of the Stranger). Thanks to the efforts of David Drew[citation needed], a dancer with the Royal Ballet for over 50 years, the ballet was revived in 2014 by the Birmingham Royal Ballet, under the direction of Gillian Lynne, a member of the original cast.

ADELINE GENEE: A Lifetime of Ballet Under Six Reigns

ADELINE GENEE: A Lifetime of Ballet Under Six Reigns

Guest Ivor ADELINE GENEE: A Lifetime of Ballet Under Six Reigns Ivor Guest, Published by A & C Black, London, 1958 First Edition. 8vo. Dark green boards with gilt lettering to spine. In an illustrated dustjacket that presents some wear to the extremities. The book includes a newspaper clipping of Dame Adeline Genee’s Obituary and her order of service for the funeral at Golders Green crematorium. From the Introduction GENÉE! It is a name that our grandchildren will cherish. .And alas! our grandchildren will never believe, will never be able to imagine, what Geneé was." So wrote Max Beerbohm, "the Incomparable Max", of his contemporary, Adeline Genée, who, like him, was honoured with that final and rarest accolade. To Edwardian ears, attuned so much more acutely than those of later generations to the grace of living, such a recogni- for no one who never had the privilege of seeing the incomparable Genée dance can hope to comprehend or appreciate her art to the full. It is only through memories and the written word, therefore, that we today can catch a glimpse-even though fleeting and indis-tinct —of the Genée who in her prime drew, from every corner of the British possessions, admirers for whom no journey to London, however short, was deemed complete without a visit to the Empire Theatre in Leicester Square. This book, however, is more than a study of Genée the ballerina, although that in itself would amply justify a volume. She was one of the brightest stars of the London theatre for many years before the Diaghilev Ballet made its appearance. She came to London in the year of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, when ballet was centred at the Empire and Alhambra Theatres, and in her ten famous years at the former theatre not only raised the popularity of ballet to heights it had never attained before but, through the example of her impeccable way of life.
