TARANTULA
Dylan, Bob Generally regarded as one of the greatest songwriters ever, Dylan has been a major figure in popular culture over his 60-year career. He rose to prominence in the 1960s when his songs, 'Blowin' in the Wind' (1963) and 'The Times They are a-Changin' (1964) became anthems for the civil rights and antiwar movements. His lyrics during this period incorporated political, social, philosophical, and literary influences, defying pop music conventions and appealing to the burgeoning counterculture. This is his first book, an experimental prose poetry collection written in 1965 and 1966. It was published in 1971. It employs stream of consciousness writing, somewhat in the style of Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and Allen Ginsberg. Its style is also reminiscent of Arthur Rimbaud's in A Season in Hell. It captures Bob Dylan's preoccupations at a crucial juncture in his artistic development, showcasing the imagination of a folk poet laureate who was able to combine the humanity and compassion of his country roots with the playful surrealism of modern art. Angry, funny, and strange, the poems and prose in this collection reflect the concerns found in Dylan's most seminal music: a sense of protest, a verbal playfulness and spontaneity, and a belief in the artistic legitimacy of chronicling everyday life and eccentricity on the street. 137 pages. HOW TO WIN THE NOBEL PRIZE. An Unexpected Life in Science
In 1989 Michael Bishop and Harold Varmus were awarded the Nobel Prize for their discovery that normal genes under certain conditions can cause cancer. In this book, Bishop tells us how he and Varmus made their momentous discovery. More than a lively account of the making of a brilliant scientist, How to Win the Nobel Prize is also a broader narrative combining two major and intertwined strands of medical history: the long and ongoing struggles to control infectious diseases and to find and attack the causes of cancer. Alongside his own story, that of a youthful humanist evolving into an ambivalent medical student, an accidental microbiologist, and finally a world-class researcher, Bishop gives us a fast-paced and engrossing tale of the microbe hunters. It is a narrative enlivened by vivid anecdotes about our deadliest microbial enemies--the Black Death, cholera, syphilis, tuberculosis, malaria, smallpox, HIV--and by biographical sketches of the scientists who led the fight against these scourges. Bishop then provides an introduction for nonscientists to the molecular underpinnings of cancer and concludes with an analysis of many of today's most important science-related controversies--ranging from stem cell research to the attack on evolution to scientific misconduct. How to Win the Nobel Prize affords us the pleasure of hearing about science from a brilliant practitioner who is a humanist at heart. Bishop's perspective will be valued by anyone interested in biomedical research and in the past, present, and future of the battle against cancer. 271 pages with index. Illustrated. In this large volume are 225 Haiku poems that are not only entertaining and enlightening, but has revealed that Oki has a unique talent of packaging big and small issues into a mere 17 syllables. Signed by William Wharton on the page opposite the copyright page. Author's third novel. Set in the Ardennes Forest on Christmas Eve 1944, Sergeant Will Knott and five other GIs are ordered close to the German lines to establish an observation post in an abandoned chateau. Here they play at being soldiers in what seems to be complete isolation. That is, until the Germans begin revealing their whereabouts and leaving signs of their presence: a scarecrow, equipment the squad had dropped on a retreat from a reconnaissance mission and, strangest of all, a small fir tree hung with fruit, candles, and cardboard stars. Suddenly, Knott and the others must unravel these mysteries, learning as they do about themselves, about one another, and about the "enemy," until A Midnight Clear reaches its unexpected climax, one of the most shattering in the literature of war. Basis for the big screen film directed by Keith Gordon that starred Ethan Hawke, Gary Sisine, and Peter Berg. A near fine copy in a near fine jacketA BLACK JOURNEY IN TECH

Bound in slick illustrated boards. 160 pages illustrated from photographs.LONE SURVIVOR. The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10
Signed by both authors, one on the half-title page and one on the title page. Basis for the big screen film directed by Peter Berg that starred Mark Wahlberg and was released in January 2014. On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive. This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers. A six-foot-five-inch Texan, Leading Petty Officer Luttrell takes us, blow by blow, through the brutal training of America's warrior elite and the relentless rites of passage required by the Navy SEALs. He transports us to a monstrous battle fought in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan, where the beleaguered American team plummeted headlong a thousand feet down a mountain as they fought back through flying shale and rocks. In this rich, moving chronicle of courage, honor, and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare â" and a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. 390 pages illustrated from photographs. An epic, which is to say, it begins in the forests of ancient Bohemia and doesn't conclude until nine o'clock tonight [Paris time]. It is a saga, as well. A saga must have a hero, and the hero of this one is a janitor with a missing bottle. The bottle is blue, very, very old, and embossed with the image of a goat-horned god. If the liquid in the bottle is actually is the secret essence of the universe, as some folks seem to think, it had better be discovered soon because it is leaking and there is only a drop or two left. Now Linda Wertheimer has collected the best parts of that conversation; the result is a wonderfully engaging book that recalls and reveals our recent history as never before. The year 1995 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of NPR's founding. Wertheimer was present at the creation, so she is ideally qualified to cull the best interviews and commentaries from each year. Her selections allow us to revisit the major news stories of our time - Watergate, the fall of Saigon, the Iranian hostage crisis, the rise of Ronald Reagan, the AIDS epidemic. Preface by Jeanloup Sieff. Focusing primarily on dancers who have performed with the Paris Opera Ballet, this portfolio of forty-six duotone images taken between 1953 and 1994 pays homage to the art as revealed in dancers' bodies. Rudolf Nureyev stands intently playing a piano in a prop-filled studio; Suzanne Farrell, en pointe, gazes into a skylight, her tall silhouette seeming to float toward it; groups of dancers relax in a classroom, casually stretching while waiting to perform; Sylvie Guillem perches on a stool, gazing cooly at the camera over a folded knee; Carolyn Carlson peers intently into a mirror, brushing powder onto her hollow cheeks. Maintaining that dancers posses a "corporal intelligence" that gives them a unique ability to fill empty space with the beauty of their movements, Jeanloup Sieff has captured both the fleeting gestures of individual dancers and the timeless world of their profession. 46 duotone plates. Bound in black cloth with white spine stamping. A volume in the Motta Photography Series. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacketAMERICA BETWEEN THE EXTREMISTS. A New Approach to Political Maturity
Inscribed by Douglas Boggs on the front endpaper "Senator Magnuson--With Hopes the Administration / will have the courage to attempt to / solve these problems./ Douglas Boggs / May 1969." Warren Grant Magnuson was an American lawyer and politician who represented the state of Washington in Congress for 44 years, first as a Representative from 1937 to 1944, and then as a senator from 1944 to 1981. Magnuson was a member of the Democratic Party. Deliberately controversial: its grand aim is to unite right, left, and center in the exultant march of a continous American Revolution. Boggs appeals to militants of both extremes, as well as to conservatives and passive hippies, to abandon their negative and disruptive principles. He sees their interests, behavior and divisions inviting dangers from abroad and totalitarianism at home. A very good plus book in a very good plus clean dust jacketJULIA CHILD & MORE COMPANY

WE THE PEOPLES Nobel Peace Message
During his momentous time as Secretary-General of the UN, Kofi Annan played a decisive role in launching the Millennium Development Goals, establishing the International Criminal Court, and articulating the Responsibility to Protect as a guiding principle for international action. In 2001 - just after 9/11 - he and the UN jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize, 'for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world.' These and other crucial events - including the crises over Kosovo and East Timor, and the war in Iraq - are encapsulated in this book of Kofi Annan's key speeches from throughout his term of office. The selection gives a broad view of Annan's most pressing concerns, and the eloquence with which he addressed them. Covering subjects from development, health, and climate change to the prevention of genocide and the ideal of diversity, these statements show how deeply involved the UN was in the most important issues of the era. We the Peoples is a timely and much-needed reminder of Annan's ideas and priorities; his words on war, peace, humanity, and 'man's inhumanity to man' still resonate today. This book will offer many pointers for maintaining and developing the UN as a vital instrument for humanity in the coming decades. 63 pages illustrated from photographs. MY TWO WARS. With an Introduction by Page Stegner
Thomsen, Moritz My Two Wars describes the great battles in his life -one against a rich, tyrannical father; the other against anti-aircraft gunners over Germany in 1943 and 1944. It was completed shortly before Thomsen's death, and with it he concluded the story of his unusual life. In this posthumously published masterpiece he returns to his youth growing up in a wealthy Seattle household with the father he despised, and goes off to war in Europe as a bombardier with the Eighth Air Force. In his introduction Page Stegner calls it "the best narrative account ever written of an imperfect and fragile human soul caught up in the air war over Germany." But it is Thomsen's other war - his lifelong and monumental battle with his father -which begins and ends the book and makes My Two Wars one of the most outrageous and memorable father-and-son stories ever told.
