El Mexico desconocido / cinco anos de exploracion entre las tribus de la Sierra Madre Occidental; en la tierra caliente de Tepic y Jalisco, y entre los Tarascos de Michoacan

Lumholtz, Carl. 2 vols, large 8vos, pp xxxvi, 516, 5 colored plates, 1 folding map; xviii, 516, 8 colored plates, 2 folding maps. The color plates are of pottery and artistic designs, mainly Huichol, and many b/w illustrations, both drawings and photographs. Lumholtz carried out his important ethnographic, archaeological and biological expedition to the Tarahumaras, Huicholes, Cora et al. in northwestern Mexico, the Sierra Madre Occidental, in the 1890's. Along with private support from the Amer. Museum of Natural History, the government of Porf. Diaz supplied much assistance including a military escort for his safety, but Lumholtz was an experienced explorer ans scientist, and the author of other books on his investigations of the Australian aborigines. The region was still unknown even to the Mexican government at the time, and Lumholtz' contributions to the knowledge of this vast area, in all its aspects, were extensive and thorough. The inclusion of serious ethnographical studies was unique at the time and gives his work greater significance: it has been republished in Mexico a couple of times, and there is a Dover edition of the English original. The American edition, with identical binding, was the first, published in 1902; this Mexican edition, translated from the English by Dalvino Davalos, is a couple of years later, and much scarcer on the market. The paper is coated, consequently the books are heavy. Very nice decorative publisher's binding, of rust cloth, lightly worn, gilt title material, and cameo image of native woman surrounded by pottery motif. Slight wear at top and bottom of spine. Very good.
